It seems like fifteen years ago it was Dobermans that were combative and overbred. Now they are less popular, and less bred, so the 'negative' breeding aspects seem to be less prevalent. I found out one of our mutts is around half Dobe and she is absolutely the sweetest dog I've ever seen in my life.

Just because HALF the dogs are bred for certain characteristics doesn't mean that ALL the dogs are. Plus, if they are mixed breed dogs they will also have characteristics of the other breeds. If they could actually stop pitbull fighting then maybe the pitbulls in fifteen or twenty years would only be the ones that so many owners love.

Let's not forget that ALL animals have the potential to be dangerous. So do ALL humans. Not every animal acts that way, though. There are all kinds of wild animals who would never think of hurting humans but have been hunted to endangerment and extinction because of blanket generalizations about their species. The same can be said about breeds of dogs. I personally wouldn't own a pitbull because I don't like the way they look. But I would get another dobe mix in a heartbeat, despite having been warned about them through my whole childhood, and if ANYONE criticized my dog because of the breed she happened to be born, we would be having an argument. A big one. I love my dog.

I've read that a lot of dog attacks are blamed on pitbulls, when in fact it is another type of terrier or a mix that commits the attack - "pitbull" has largely become a catch-all term for mid-size terriers. There was a neat link posted (here, I think) once with pictures of various dog breeds, and the game was to "identify the pit-bull". It wasn't easy. This isn't always the case of course, but it's one of those factors that is skewing the statistics at least somewhat.

Myself and many Southerners are truly appalled at her weak attempt to explain away Sick Michael Vick's actions. Please, Whoopi------the Southerners demand an apology from you!! There are PLENTY of animal abusers from the North, the East and the West. It's atrocious behavior by ANYONE, and animal fighting, torture and killing must be made a felony charge, punishable by JAIL TIME and FINES. Throw the book at them, EVERY TIME, and perhaps this madness will STOP!!
