Thats why I am inclined to not call Isaiah a bigot, just extremely insensitive when angry, and prone to acts of stupidity. He doesn't have a history of hatred towards gays.
|
How you people can think him CHOKING Patrick Dempsey and yelling, "I'm not your little f*ggot like T.R." doesn't affect T.R. Knight is beyond me. He was just being loving, I guess? He then repeated the word, referring to T.R. as it again in front of the world's press when denying the incident happened. How many incidents does it take for someone to call another person a "f*ggot" before they have a "history" of hatred? How many times can a person use the n-word before they're a certified racist?
Not only did Washington physical assault a coworker, but supposedly it was BECAUSE Dempsey had stood up for his friend in the wake of Washington's abuse. And because Dempsey dared to stick up for a friend who happens to be gay, now he gets other homophobes saying that it's because he must be gay, too - because no one wants to admit that Isaiah Washington is a bigot.
Washington went through some bullshit counselling and did a PSA only because he was FORCED to. He choked a co-worker, called another co-worker a slur repeatedly, lied about it and never apologized. His actions now just show his TRUE feelings and that he was NEVER sorry and doesn't think what he did was wrong at all. You can tell his true feelings by him now saying outright that T.R. should be fired. Why should he be fired, according to Washington? Because T.R. dared to be gay and live his life, forcing poor little Isaiah to call him a "f*ggot." In Washington's mind, if the producers hadn't hired a "f*ggot" in the first place he wouldn't be in this mess.
Isaiah Washington is no better than those rednecks in the 60's who used to beat up blacks, and then excused it by saying they weren't really racist, they were just "forced to" because those black people didn't "know their place." They'd never attack black people that "know their place," you see? Just as I'm Washington would tell you that he would never slur a gay person as long as they "knew their place."

Washington was wrong, but what ABC did is pretty obvious. This created HUGE buzz gor GA. They let it ride and build the show, making Washington act like a naughty little puppy being chastised. When it came time to look at next season, the fall guy had served his purpose, so bye bye.
He should just get over it.

They made the mistake of letting TR and Katie browbeat them into thinking that Burke was a dispensable character. He wasn't, and they're going to realize that when the ratings tank next season. Considering all of the other ways in which the writers of this show royally fucked up last season, they couldn't afford to lose Burke.

I said that purely from a gossip's standpoint. What I remember of the initial reports was there was an on-set altercation and Washington used a gay slur. It was not clear in the beginning that he used it against T.R. Everything else was well after the fact. As a gossip, I should be able to speculate without being called a bigot. Especially consiering I haven't actually given my opinion regarding Washington's actions.
In any case, this is a site with a "Who's Gay?" forum. We speculate about sexuality all the time without being called bigots. Do it regarding this Grey's mess (and it IS a mess) and now we're haters.

Talk radio makes its money from catering mostly to angry insecure straight white men whose egos are soothed by seeing women, black or otherwise, in highly sexualized and economically and politically submissive roles. This demographic loves to hear minority races, women and gays put down in the privacy of their cars and their homes. They know that their views are considered repugnant in post-civil rights America. But, in America, one can get anything one wants if one is willing to pay for it.
And behind every industry there are lobbies and PR firms who frame the issue in ways that blame the real victim i.e women, gays, minority races and also cast major corporations like CBS Radio, ABC Radio and Sirius as the victims of liberal elitism and martyrs for the First Amendment.
Big Media knows that if the debate is on the actual issues, they will lose. So they frame the terms of the debate as being about the credibility of the accuser/real victim and cast themselves as the underdog battling a vicious unscrupulous enemy.
How similar to rape trials.
Howard Stern has not lost cost his network advertising revenue. Don Imus did. So, in popular opinion: Don Imus = Bad, Howard Stern = good.
If Jolie's movie does well at the box office, anyone opposing her playing the role of an Afro-Cuban woman will be called a politically correct wuss and told to get over it.
Same thing with Isiah Washington. The network wanted to see the which demographic's anger and defections would lose them more money: the blacks and the other social conservatives or the gays and the social liberals.
The gays and liberals won this round.

Agree, they made him their bitch and then fired his ass after he'd done all they asked of him.

you know, you're speculating also - we all are. If one of my coworkers attacked me physically and then throttled me publicly, do you think my boss would wait MONTHS to handle it? NO! It would be handled today and there would be police involvement (hello, assault)- that's why I call BULLSHIT on that story. Is Washington homophobic, sure. Is ABC moneygrubbing sonsabitches who used the homophobe as long as it suited their purpose and then made an example of him? Damn Right!

Everyone should learn from this. If you do not like gays or other minorities, keep it to yourself and your hate group meetings.

People really need to put on their big boy and girl panties and stop letting words hurt them. There is so much more in this world to worry about than name calling.

It's really not so much the words as the assholery behind them. The words are just expressions of it.

T.R. took advantage of the situation in my opinion. He just blew it up. And Isaiah said it again to say that he didn't say it in the first place. Plus, he did everything ABC wanted him to do. I don't know, I've said the word before and so have all the people around me. I don't say it anymore but I say "that's so gay" a lot and I say it around my gay friends too. About 30% of my highschool is gay and others are Bi. No one minds because that word is so empty. There's like....very few Caucasian kids in my school and they're allowed to say the N word by the African American people around them. They're just words.
And I'm friends with a lot of homophobic people too. One of my best friends is homophobic while another best friend is so gay it's unbelievable. I just don't let them stay in the same room together. People can co-exist. My friend Charles knows my friend Ahmed doesn't like him because he's gay. He lets it go though. Live and let live.

We're talking about someone harassing his co-worker at the workplace for being gay. I'm with Grimm on this one. It's way more acceptable to be a homophobe than it is to be a racist.
This is not just about a bunch of panty-waist liberals getting all uptight and politically correct as usual. This is about the right of every human being to be treated with dignity at the workplace.
I think that the reaction would be a whole lot different if T.R had shouted to Dempsey: I'm not your little n****r like Isaiah.
