My grandmother's doctor ordered the blue tag for her even though she had not driven in 20 years. He pointed out that we could use when we drive her around. I never used it once. I would always drive up to the curb in front of where we were going and get her and the wheelchair out there. Then I would go park in a normal spot. I could not bring myself to take the space from someone who may actually need it when I could easily walk. When she died we ripped up the card and did not renew it when we got the application in the mail.
I often see what appear to be healthy people using the spots. I try to convince myself that they must have a heart condition or something not visable to the eye. I want to believe the best but I know better.

i hate this bitch but i think missing a limb qualifies you as disabled. maybe less disabled than people with more serious handicaps, but still.
also, people with prosthetic limbs sometimes can't wear them all the time as they can get painful. there are probably times when she goes around on crutches.

i just wonder how far she'll make it on the show. i suppose if she actually is a talented dancer maybe the 'fans' will keep her around a bit but i would be truly shocked if she did make it past the 1st round also. how many heather mills fans do you know? completely agree with whoever said this on the 1st page ,too lazy to look sorry lol pathetic attempt for ratings.

Hang on - I have a friend that doesn't have a hand, his other hand is disfigured. He rides a motorbike & his not hand is on the clutch side (I'm not gonna tell you haw he changes gear).
Not having a hand does not interfear with his mobility, and he's probably run you over if he heard you say that! (i.e. suggest that he was handicapped)
I think that there are a number (and maybe the majority?) that push the boundarys of their world as far as they can - and do without the handicaps permit.
Then there are some people that claim disability benefit, have a blue sticker and then get caught working as a fruit picker....
As for HMM - she's quite prepared to use & abuse the public's opinion to bolster up her poor public image (IMO).

The bonehead said “Hey man, I’m sorry, I didn’t know” and quickly took off in his car.
If someone uses a permit improperly it’s up to the police to fine them and not the amateur parking police.

Amen to that.
When I was 6 mos. pregnant w/ my youngest I used one of the special parking spaces at the grocery store reserved for expectant & new mothers. It's not like I had to use it, I could walk fine, but the lot was full so that's where I parked.
The store's sign said I could, right?
Anyway, some asshat left a note on my car that said something like: "This space is reserved for pregnant women which you clearly are not. Be more considerate next time."
It pissed me off that this stranger had nothing better to do than to watch me and where I parked, and take it upon themselves to tell me that I was not pregnant (just b/c I wasn't huge and they couldn't tell that I was) and therefore had no right to park there.
Sometimes you really cannot tell what someone's situation is and it's best to mind your own business.
About Heather Mills, can't stand the bitch, but the woman did lose a leg for crying out loud and has the right to the blue badge IMO.

There is a guy in the town where I used to live who goes around keeping watch on Disabled parking places. He follows people and takes down the license plates and snaps them with a digital camera. Good for him.
Hell, we have one where I take classes. It's a huge black Hummer, new, shiny, all cherried out, with a nice little handicapped placard in the dashboard. One of these days I'm going to lay in wait and find out just who that is and nail 'em if they're not truly disabled.

I know of several who have them and don't need them. I remember that I tried to park in a pregnancy slot in front of my hospital when I was 1 week overdue with my son. With my 1 1/2 year old daughter on my hip, I walked from about 30 cars back because all the preggo spots were full. As I walked towards them, I saw some ignorant rap-blasting jerk stroll outta his car and stroll right into the hospital, and no he was not pregnant. LOSERS! Gotta love them!

I would agree with this if she wasn't angling for a spot on the dance show. If she can dance around just fine with the two-legged folk, then she doesn't need to be parking in a handicapped spot. I don't like how she uses her disability to garner sympathy when she wants it, but otherwise manages perfectly well.

I agree, some disabilities, like heart problems and some lung problems can't be seen. That being said though I know people who either use the placard when the disabled person isn't with them, or have the person with them, but the disabled person waits in the car. I see this all the time at the grocery store. Yes it is legal but come on. What if someone who is disabled and is by themselves can't park close enough because some ***hole wants to park close when he doesn't have to

In the UK it sounds difficult to get a "blue badge." Around here (in my part of the US, anyway) they give out handicapped permits like they give out candy to babies! I know that many people do need them, but some are obese people who need the exercise walking to and from their vehicles. I don't say anything because you never know the full story, like they might have a thyroid condition or take steroid medication. It pisses me off, just the same.
As for Heather Mills, she's got one leg, so she'd be considered handicapped.

The disabled lobby seem very pc -don't they want Heather's disability to *improve?* I don't like her but good for someone with one leg if they can attempt to dance - isn't this being a role model for the disabled? I hate all this "forever sick" stuff. Disabled people can get better!

Yeah, but if you tell your dr you've got back pain - apparently- most of them will sigh anything....
I've a friend who is verging on that (obese that is) & wondered why he didn't take exercise. Well, I'm glad that I managed to remain tactful because I found out subsequently that when he was early 20s he broke his leg in 53 places... had lumps of steel in it, bone graphs & everything. Then one day he slipped a couple of inches - and it broke again.... He tries to use a rowing machine, but sometimes it throws him out for a week & he's in horrendus pain. He's a lovely bloke too, is registered disabled & refuses to have a blue badge eventhough he can't walk far or stand for long periods of time.
I've told him he's daft but he just says that there are people much worse off than him....

The whole situation frustrates me! I wish my grandparents would get one, my g-f gets lightheaded in the stores and heads back out on his own which leaves my g-m wandering aimlessly. Even going to the Veteran's Hospital, he says he can barely make it to and from the building and yet he refuses to get a tag.
I always try to keep in mind that whoever is in that spot might have something going on that I can't see. There have been many days that I've considered talking to the doctor about getting one for myself but then feel horrible at the thought. A few weeks ago I had to pull over on the highway because my knee gave out (the RIGHT one, ACK). I didn't think about what I was doing, I was just trying to make it stop hurting, I made it over to the side and flung the door open and straightened my leg out. THEN I looked down to see the shoulder line for the off-ramp UNDER my leg. "SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!" as I'm hopping on one foot to get around to the other side of the van. Days like that, I'm pissed that it happens, I get angry, swear up and down I'm getting one because an extra 20 steps in the parking lot could have me hanging off the cart in the store or worse, driving the buggy. Then I'm thinking if it's that bad I shouldn't be driving to the store.
AND I just loved being pregnant and not able to walk and seeing families getting out their cars in the "family spots" and their idea of an infant looked to be about 18 months!

They certainly do have a heart problem. A lack of one.
