Yes, absolutely.
Queen Elton needs to shut his trap. He has no right to complain.

Even the recent pic of Jack Nicholson on a boat eating a hot dog looks comparatively HAWT!

i wouldn't write hip hop off just because it uses samples. think of it as collages. it's like saying that a great artist that makes collages is less good than a great artist that paints - they're both great artists, they just use different media to express themselves. it is possible to be totally original whilst recycling material - it's all about how you use it and put it together. i'm not talking about stupid shit like most of the hip hop on mtv but you will be hard pressed to find one serious music critic that doesn't recognise the genius of, say, the wu-tang clan's 36 chambers.

For all the damage the Net and downloads may or may not to to industry profits, it also allows for users to become familiar with music they wouldn't otherwise, and up and coming bands to promote their music.
The reason music has gotten crappier is the the record industry, and today's consumerist, apathetic, superficial society. The Web is part of this society, no doubt, but it's not the source of the problem.

excellent post. i couldn't agree more.
many, many bands have benefitted from the internet and i think it's been especially good for indie and underground bands. it's brought music to people that wouldn't otherwise be exposed to it in the mainstream media.
a friend of mine and his band just got a spot at a very well known music festival this summer and it's mostly thanks to the internet and word of mouth - they don't have even have a record label and they released their album themselves.

The more Elton ages and becomes more bitter, the more he makes me laugh. Starting from when he called Taiwanese photogaphers, "rule, vile pigs" to accusing THE Madonna of lip-synching in her concerts. This guy, to me, is hilarious!

I'm kind of glad that the internet has made more music readily availible. Maybe it'll knock the concert prices down and bring back more artists touring and performing on stage. Maybe how well they manage to do there (not just ticket sales/dollars but actually drawing the crowds) will become the new bar, as opposed to how much they make some corporation with their CD sales.

Bullshit.
I'm going to a concert tonight. Nothing beats seeing your fave bands play live. I'm a HUGE fan of small venues.
What ruined music for me was giant theatre/arena seating. If I need binoculars to see the band, why not just stay at home and listen while staring at the album? The band would appear closer to me that way, I wouldn't be stuck in my seat with no place to dance, drinking $7 piss warm Budweiser, after paying over $100 for the tix.
What ruined music for me, in short, was the greed of the band.
