Exactly - it's easy for SIR Elton "Multi Multi Millionaire" John who never needs to produce another record in his life to whinge and whine about how the internet is ruining things for musicians.

I can't stand Elton John as a person (I think he's obnoxious and hugely overrated) and, I'm in the minority on this, but I've also just never thought his music was THAT great. A few of his songs are entertaining, but I don't think they're any better than any of the other millions of hits out there. And a lot of them are just way too cheesy for my taste.

Poor Elton. He and Madonna will fight being old and irrelevant until the bitter end.

Well it's a minority of at least two.

Elton needs to stop locking himself away as his music has no relevancy to my world.

I guess he's having a dig at the Artic Monkeys who gained a massive following on the internet before releasing a record......

Oh and Prince who is playing to a packed Wembely for most of August..... Jealous much?

I sure don't agree with Elton, it is so much easier for young people to get their music played and heard now. It is a sure sign of old age though when you start saying "In my day". Having said that I love his music and we will be listening to it long after he is gone. I put him and Bernie Turpin up there with the best, Lennon & McCartney.

Where has he been? Music has been dead for a while now and it wasn't the internet that killed it.

^ ITA. Except I would add "another" to "hissy fit."

He's probably still sulking because "Crocodile Rock" was dropped from the recent Diana Concert and he's just not getting the attention he craves anymore. Oh well.

As I'm reading this thread, I'm listening to a song by an US unsigned band, recommended to me by an online German friend, and downloaded (legally) from their Last.fm page. Last week, I got talking with the record shop clerk, who handed me a demo of his greek goth band, as well as a link to their MySpace page to leave feedback.

For all the damage the Net and downloads may or may not to to industry profits, it also allows for users to become familiar with music they wouldn't otherwise, and up and coming bands to promote their music.

The reason music has gotten crappier is the the record industry, and today's consumerist, apathetic, superficial society. The Web is part of this society, no doubt, but it's not the source of the problem.

If it wasn't for the internetz and a music guru friend that searches out all the goodies (we have the same taste in music) my weekends would still be spent in Virgin Records hanging out at music stations trying to find at least one decent new cd. The radio sucks, they play the same crap over and over, because they get paid by the record companies to do so. Even iTunes Store sucks, their search feature is impossible to navigate.

I love 1970s Elton John. I think my mom must have played it when I was a baby. It is fantastic.
