I think the son is more like 13 and apparently he will live with very close family friends in their NY town so that his life will be able to continue on as normally as possible. I wonder how his other kids are doing?

this is so sad and unfair!
It makes me really wonder about life and why people like this have to suffer through so much for no apparant reason. Their poor orphaned son is who I immediately thought about, but this poor lady was only 44 and suffered for over 10 years w/ her husband's injuries due to his own mistake, but then she gets lung cancer through no fault of her own and I knew she would die, b/c its such a hard cancer to beat (the late great comedian Andy Kaufman had the same thing and he wasn't a smoker either), but nonetheless its still a shock and a terrible injustice.
*ITs for reasons (totally unfair early deaths) like this that I know theres no God, but for reasons (people) like this that I wish there was a heaven.

I heard the news this morning and actually felt like crying for this poor woman. I hadn't felt that way in a long time over a celebrity. She went through so much adversity in her life. She was a faithful and devoted wife and cared for her beloved husband till the end. What a rotten card she got dealt with...first your husband gets paralyzed, dies a decade later and then you're stricken with lung cancer when you don't even smoke! Amazing. She had her entire life ahead of her. Their poor son is an orphan now. Life can be pretty unfair sometimes..if there is indeed a heaven, this woman has just got to be there.
This news was totally depressing...

It's true. Why do some nice, decent people have to suffer so much shit in their lives and the Kevin Federlines of this world just breeze through life and always come up smelling of roses.

OMG, I feel so bad for their son. Losing both parents at such a young age is more than anyone should have to bear. Talk about rotten luck. And I'm sure dana was mortified at the thought of leaving her son all alone.

a little off topic; but does anyone know if she was around a lot of second-hand smoke or if this was just a freak thing?

^^Yes, I believe she was exposed to a lot of second hand smoke, in clubs and arenas when she was a singer. That's what I had read anyway...

Dana's mother died of ovarian cancer a couple of years ago..cancer may just run in her family if there is such a thing. Also, I'm a firm believer that stress can cause illness in our bodies. All those years of caring for her husband...it must've been extremely stressful, sad, etc....who knows what toll it took on her body.
