I've always thought it was money and comfort.
Many couples stay together - cheating or not - because it would cost less to stay together than not. Some people stay in a bad relationship - cheating or not - because it's easier to deal with what is familiar than venture out into something foriegn an unknown alone and this mentality just worsens with age.
So why should cheating be any different?
Denial - self esteem are just a part of "comfort level" - IMHO

Cheating is bad enough but, to hire the girl and have her work for you just so you can probably get sex whenever you want is unforgivable.
To the person that asked why Billy and her got divorced, I remembered the story came out about him putting her face up to a mirror and telling her to look at herself because she wasn't attractive anymore. Plus, he publically cheated on her all the time. Maybe that's why she decided to get a divorce now because she knows that once a cheat always a cheat.
And in response to the Cindy Crawford thing. There's all these stories about her hubby cheating on her with the waitresses at his clubs

I am not surprised by the amount of cheating that goes on. I think alot of men cheat, alot of women know about it, alot throw them out, and alot stay with the men. Most (meaning more than half) cheat I think. As for reasons women stay with cheating men?..financial reasons, the kids, because he is a good father, they actually still love the man.denial, etc. Just because a man cheats does not mean he no longer loves his wife. This instance is pretty heinous in not only how he hired her as his assistant, but also in the horrible public nature of the revelation. It is surprising how many 'open' relationships there are in the gay community..at least for gay men that is(that I know of). Maybe it is because it is all men...and we are dealing with the nature of men. It is one thing to reach or have an agreement, and another to lie and do something behind someone's back. I do think it is possible to love someone and still have sex with another person though. Not advocating or defending anything..just stating some beliefs.
The really awful thing is how hurt and betrayed she must feel.

I've never understood why someone who wants to cheat simply doesn't leave the relationship he or she is in first. It's ridiculous for anyone to think they'll every get away with it. Why do they do it? Because if they can, they will. Simple as that.
I have a problem with anyone who states "I love my wife, I love my kids.." blah, blah, blah and then goes off and does that. If you love someone, you just. don't. do. it.
Yes Christie does leave a trail of men behind, but I think people will forgive her for kicking this one to the curb.

Yeah, she gets a free pass on this bad marriage but who's betting that they get back together? Who wants to be four times divorced?

I find it ironic that Billy Joel of all homely people cheated on Christy Brinkley. Mmmm, K.

This story I completely believe. I never liked that guy on his smarmy looks alone. I'll speculate that this is not the first time he's stepped out.

Sure denial is huge for women and men. But once denial is finally over, so is the relationship. Some people never get out of denial, but most people hit bottom eventually. Just going through this right now with my youngest stepdaughter and I've seen it countless other times.

There seems to be this belief, contrary to all evidence, that just because a woman is beautiful no man will ever cheat on her. Sex is about conquest and power and ego gratification for these guys -- it has nothing to do with a gorgeous loving wife at home.

Obviously, when people cheat they take a big risk. It didn't help Pete being out in public (stupid) if he did go out to dinner with her. They are very social people in the Hamptons, you'd think he'd be smarter.
Being divorced four times when you're a celebrity seems to be normal in their world. Liz Taylor, the Gabor sisters and others...toss him out, get another. No biggie.

Yeah, but you get the feeling she's no walk in the park to live with. Or maybe she just has incredibly bad taste in men, like many beautiful women.

It looks like Christie Brinkley has been married pretty much all of her adult life. She was still a teenager when she married her first husband.
Peter Cook always looks so uncomfortable in front of the camera, as if he's holding in a big turd or something. The kids are cute It's very sad to have their father/stepfather fuck up so royally in such a public way. I think that must be why she threw him out--there was no way to keep this quiet. It's been my experience that more women look the other way when their husbands cheat than those that actually divorce their husbands.

During my divorce, I found out my ex had been cheating on me for 4 of the almost 7 years we were married. He admitted it was the conquest for him. He's been a cheater since he was a teenager. He didn't stop until he hit bottom(he did it to himself), I just watched in horror. He says he's a changed person now...I guess I will sit back and watch what happens knowing it has nothing to do with me.
