^^ I grew up with no money until my mom went back to work when I was 12. I remember having no power, no milk for dinner, eating whatever my mom could dig out of the cupboards, lived life constantly on a penny budget. But we always had a home.
I think the 80's wrecked the cool working class intellectual. Now, you if your kids don't have their own TV's by the time they are 5, you're a freak. I remember once, I told a friend of mine that my kids only get new toys at holidays, birthdays, Christmas, etc... She looked at me like I had 2 heads. Because SHE goes out and buys the lastest DVD, video games, toys the second they come out.

^^You're a girl after my own heart. My kids would love if they had the latest this and the latest that or even more than one tv in teh house but we refuse to have more and we refuse to give them everythign they want. If they really want something, they can do extra chores, save up and buy it themselves. I also hate when my kids go to a friend's house and moan that their friend can play playstation/watch tv whenever they want, while at home we've got strict rules. Hopefully they'll grow up and appreciate the fact that we gave them a life.

I seem to remember reading rumors and blurbs here and there about Jim Carrey actually being depressed for long periods of time. Don't know why, though. It is ironic that it's often comedians who are the most damaged.

I'm the same as you. And you know these parents tell themselves they do it "for the kids", when really they do it so THEY look good. Because, sadly, in many places it has become the new synonym for good parenting: how much you spend on superfluous stuff for your kids

^^No shit. A roomful of toys, but no one around to show when you do cool shit with the stuff. I feel kind of sorry for kids today. My parents were a pain in the ass with all their breathing down my neck and checking up on me but looking back, boy am I glad they were around. I would hate to be like the kids today, always shopped out to someone else or stuck in playgroups or activities. Time with the 'rents is always good, even if it doesn't seem that way at the time.

The other day I asked my daughter what some of her favorite memories are so far in her life. She is just 13. She wrote down her top 10 and not one involved materialistic things or even vacations much to my surprise. Her favorite memories all involved times spent with me and our extended family when we were laughing ourselves silly. It really touched me that these times mean as much to her as they do to me.
My daughter has a comfy life but has to earn her own money to get most things. She has some friends whose parents throw cash at them when they go to the movies, etc. Most of her friends are more like us though. They get a set amount based on chores and they must learn to be responsible on how they spend it.
Now back to the topic at hand ...... Butt I think it is harder for people to accept abuse from a Mom because that is the one person you should be able to count on as nuturing and loving. Mama Bear is supposed to protect you not hurt you.

^^Fair enough on the mamma bear thoughts. I suppose you're right but mr. butt has such a close relationship to the kids that I think they'd be equally devastated if he turned bonkers on them. And how nice that your daughter has real memories based on real events! A real success, eh? I can imagine there was one puffed up mom walking around that day.

People who can keep themselves sane even with horrendous lives find that having a sense of humour sees them through. I laugh and joke about everything. Adnittedly sometimes I just cant, but most times everything is a joke. They say there is a thin line between madness and genius which is what true comedians do possess.

jim carrey's family lived in a van. chevy chase sounds like an extreme case but i think alot of comedians have aderep need for attention. i believe mike myer's has said that being funny was the only way to get attention in his house growing up and all his little characters came from that. then there's rosie....
deeply inscure people.

Thats funny cause my mom only let me play games on weekends and encouraged the arts.. However, my boyfriend was always allowed to play the games and had all the new gadgets.. Now- he makes 3 times the money I make designing games, while I starve as a musician..
I appreciate everything I have and do now tho.. I'm glad she did it.
It's just ironic!

Wow. How awful. I used to beg my parents never to use a belt on me the way one of my neighborhood's friend's dad used to. It scared the hell out of me. They said "what are you kidding?"
My cousin used to be in a relationship many years ago with a man whose mother was a concert pianist. He and his brother were abused too. It tweaked my cousin's ex's brain, the younger brother became a guitar prodigy and lives in Germany. I think cousin's ex is doing all right, but apparently his child is autistic.
