Jolie's baby delivered by Cesarean

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The African-born daughter of Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt was delivered by Cesarean section in a weekend surgery and birth that "went flawlessly," Jolie's doctor said on Tuesday.

Details of the birth, which occurred on Saturday at the Cottage Medi-Clinic Hospital in the Namibian town of Swakopmund, were first disclosed in a statement the couple furnished exclusively to People magazine.

Pitt's publicist, Cindy Guagenti, later confirmed the magazine's report.

The infant, named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, weighed 7 pounds (3.18 kg) at birth and was described as healthy, though a surgical delivery was necessary because the baby was in a potentially risky feet-first breech position in the womb.

"Angelina underwent a scheduled Cesarean due to breech presentation," said Dr. Jason Rothbart, the couple's Los Angeles-based obstetrician, who oversaw the delivery.

"Brad was with Angelina in the operating room the entire time and cut the umbilical cord of his daughter. The surgery and birth went flawlessly," he said.

Rothbart added that the doctors, nurses and other staff who assisted him were "amazing," and he called the delivery "a team effort."

"We would like to deeply thank the staff of the Cottage Medi-Clinic Hospital for all their kindness and commitment in assuring the successful birth of our daughter," Jolie, 30, and Pitt, 42, said in a joint statement.

The infant Shiloh joins their two adopted children, Cambodian-born son Maddox, 4, and daughter, Zahara, an Ethiopian native who is about 15 months old, in a blended celebrity clan recently labeled "the World's Most Beautiful Family" by People magazine.

But so far, no pictures of the family's latest addition have emerged. Photographers from all over the world have flocked to the southern African nation in hopes of capturing first images of the newborn that are expected to be worth millions of dollars.

Jolie, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1999 movie "Girl, Interrupted," and serves as a goodwill ambassador for UN High Commissioner for Refugees, took a shine to Namibia during production on the 2003 film "Beyond Borders."

Jolie and Pitt became acquainted in 2004 while working together on the film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," a dark comedy in which they co-starred as a couple of assassins whose marriage gets rocky when they're assigned to kill each other.

Rumors of an affair between the twice-divorced Jolie and Pitt heated up after the actor and his ex-wife, former "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston, split up in January 2005.

While their relationship quickly became one of Hollywood's most talked-about open secrets, Pitt and Jolie only confirmed their romance about five months ago, when they announced she was pregnant with his child.

The boy's and girl's name Shiloh is pronounced SHYE-loh. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "His gift." Also possibly "he who was sent." Biblical: a prophetic name for the Messiah. So as Nouvelle means new i can only assume that new messiah is the names meaning. (Tongue firmly in cheek.)

That's slightly creepy. Angelina and Brad must've been reading all of the "savior is coming" stuff online. Is there any rule that says Jesus has to come back as a boy? I mean, a girl is just as good, right? See, that's how we're all going to get fooled-- we're looking for a boy and Jeebus is really a girl.

I just don't agree with the thinking that celebrities have that their children will be automatically be more special than others if they have a different name to practically anybody else on planet earth, it strikes me as somewhat smug on their part, I dunno.
At the same time I don't blame them for not calling their kids dull boring names, but names are so subjective anyway.

Found this on an another site. Someone posted the following quote so don't know the link for the article.

It could have been breech presentation, but if it really wasn't, I wouldn't expect them to actually admit that it was because of herpes. Not saying it was or wasn't, I just view any public statement from celebs or their spokespersons with a bit of cynicism, as they are trying to put out the most polished, best image possible. Kinda like when celebs go to hospitals for "exhaustion"

I can't speak for others, but I have heard more about celebs having herpes than any other STD's, so I guess for me that's naturally where my thought process ended up going. But you have a good point.

Actually i don't think Angelina has herpes, i remember last year she was rumored to have HIV and later when she got skinny she was rumored to be on the edge of death and that's why she allowed Brad to adopt her kids So this woman has so many ill-wished rumors in a very short time period. But then we will never know who has herpes or any sort of STDs unless they made it public.

yup! you know what struck me odd about those pics? they looked staged. i mean, if i'm going to the park to kick around a ball with my man or with whomever, i'm going to dress comfy in total soccer mom garb. you know, cute sweats & running shoes, crap like that. not tight jeans and frilly i'm-going-to-the-mall-then-to-starbucks blouse. puhleeease. think out the plan before executing, tom.

I agree. Tom has a lawn the size of a football field at his home. Why does he have to go out with Katie to kick around a ball and leave the baby alone? Just another photo op. And I don't know this because I'm not a mom (doubt Katie even gave birth but i'll give her the benefit of the doubt right now) but if you are breastfeeding, wouldn't your boobs hurt to run around like that?
