Personally, I would never adopt. I know I'm not that selfless enough to do it so I would have to bow out. Not to say that if there was an extreme circumstance I wouldn't do it, but in general I can't see it. I've got my hands full with two of my own and half the time, love them as I do, I wonder why I had them in the first place.

Good for you for your honesty. Really, regardless if we adopt or have a child biologically there is no guarentee on the health of a child. Special needs children are that special needs and some adoptive parents know their limitations. We requested "healthy" children. My oldest was very sick (NOT dealthy) when we got her. She had 2 ear infections and green puss coming out of both her ears and had bronchitis. She could have had hearing loss associated with her ear infections and she still would have been OUR child. She also weighed 14 lbs at 12 months of age.

Kari, you have confirmed what I've thought all along...you must be smoking some wacky weed. How is Greece a Third World country or even close to it?

Yeah, Karizma, Greece is in no way a 3rd world country. No even "close enough."

Zahara would have been considered hard to place or unadoptable due to her medical issues.
That said, and speaking from experience, she needs to wait at least 1 year to bring another child into her family through whatever means. I was 12 weeks pregnant w/ my son when we brought our 2nd daughter home. Six months after she came home, we had another baby. It was too much and was not fair to her, although all is well and good now.

Greece is not better than the rest of middle eastern countries which are categorized as third world countries. I'm not sure if "third world" label is forbidden to be used on European countries or is it strictly used to describe poverty-stricken countries. In any case, i hope i didn't offend any Greek with the "third world" comment.

Again, I think you need a trip to Greece, or maybe just a look at the Human Development Index of some countries

My mother went to Greece and she loved it. She said the people were warm and friendly but she said it was a very, very poor country. There was a lot of poverty and she said it was gut-wrenching. In many ways, she said it reminded her of Mexico.

It is a poor country, in the rural regions especially, because Athens is just like any other big city. But then again, so are parts of Southern Italy and nobody would dream of saying that Italy is a third world country, now would they?

Thank you Barbara, very informative indeed
PrettyGirl, my dad also went there and had the same impression your mom had except that it reminded him of Egypt.

You're welcome
BTW there is no way I can be objective about Greece, it's too beautiful and the people are too nice and the food is too good and and and

Greece is lovely, if a bit over-run by tourists in parts.
