ANGELINA JOLIE has told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland she is ashamed the US has yet to sign a United Nations charter on protecting children's rights.
The actress is speaking at the event as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency.
She said today (27JAN05), "I am absolutely ashamed Washington has not formally ratified the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
"Being an American I think it's horrible. I think Congress should ratify that. If we really care about that how dare we not ratify it?"
Although the US signed the convention in 1995, it has yet to ratify the treaty, the only country besides Somalia yet to have done so.
From her platform Jolie also spoke of her first experiences at refugee camps: "It was a whole different world for me.
"Children should have an education. People should have a right to seek asylum. This has become very important to me."
Earlier during her address to the World Economic Forum Jolie warned those present not to be starstruck by her.
Jolie is in Davos, Switzerland, in her position as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency.
She spoke at the forum to lobby for the increase in humanitarian efforts in war-torn areas such as Afghanistan, and urged business leaders and politicians at the meeting not to be dazzled by her celebrity presence.
Jolie said, "I just think if I can ask anything it's for everybody in this room, including myself, to stay focused on the issues.
"To follow up on Darfur, to watch what is happening in the courts, to follow up on Nepal ... on Afghanistan."
In other news Ms Jolie and fiance Brad Pitt met with UN Secretary General KOFI ANNAN at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday (25JAN06) - fuelling speculation he is to be made a United Nations goodwill ambassador.
The actor and girlfriend ANGELINA JOLIE - already a goodwill ambassador - talked with Annan after he addressed world business leaders at the forum.
Annan has admitted he is considering giving Pitt the high-profile role. Pitt is a dedicated charity campaigner, working alongside Jolie and famously donating 40 orthopaedic beds to a hospital in Islamabad in earthquake-ravaged Pakistan last month (DEC05)
