January 20, 2006 -- Billionaire businessman Ron Perelman's five-year marriage to actress Ellen Barkin is over — and the legendary corporate raider is getting out of the match just in time to save himself a huge bundle of money, sources said yesterday.

The Revlon boss — who gained infamy in the late 1990s during a bitter custody battle with third wife Patricia Duff — served his latest spouse with divorce papers at their post Upper East Side mansion yesterday, a source familiar with the couple said.

Under the pair's prenup, the bald buyout baron is set to pay the sultry "Sea of Love" actress $20 million in the event of a split, a source said. But the marriage contract stipulated that the figure would jump dramatically if the couple stuck together until a predetermined date — and that date was fast approaching, the source said.

Despite the prenup's impending deadline, yesterday's service of papers knocked Barkin for a loop, said a source. "She's shocked. She wasn't expecting it," the source said.

With a fortune valued at $6 billion, Perelman, 62, is one of the richest men in New York City and the 34th richest man in America, according to Forbes magazine.

He is still living with Barkin, 51, at their mansion on 63rd Street between Madison and Park avenues, but he wants her out soon, the source said.

Perelman first met Barkin in 1999 at Vanity Fair's vaunted post-Oscars party, where he reportedly propositioned her by saying, "Are you single or married or what?"

Friends told the press that his marriage to the blond actress "calmed him down." But the couple reportedly split up briefly in 2004, only to get back together after he gave her an apartment as a gift.

Sources said Barkin's Hollywood liberalism caused some friction in their marriage — such as when her political convictions prompted her to refuse a ride in a Perelman aide's Hummer SUV and when she demanded that her hubby take down an American flag because she believed it was a "symbol of war."

A representative for Perelman declined to comment. Calls to a representative for Barkin were not returned by press time.

Perelman has six children with his three previous wives. Barkin has two teenage children with her former husband, actor Gabriel Byrne.

News of the split came as the corporate-takeover artist was being hailed for turning his fortunes around, after hitting some financial shoals in the years immediately following his divorce from Duff.

According to Forbes, his wealth, which hit $6.5 billion in 1997, dropped to about $2.5 billion in 2001 thanks to troubles at cosmetics giant Revlon and an investment in Marvel Comics that went bust.

Perelman eventually won custody over his daughter, Caleigh, from Duff and was named her legal guardian. Duff, a former Democratic Party fund-raiser, was given extensive visitation rights with the girl, now 10.

In the acrimonious battle, Duff claimed she was abused by Perelman — a charge he denied. He looked foolish in the press when his side argued that Caleigh could get by on a food budget of $3 a day.

Before marrying Duff, Perelman was wed to gossip columnist Claudia Cohen, with whom he had one child. She reportedly got $80 million in their divorce.

All the rest of his children are with his first wife, Faith Golding, whom he married in 1965. She got $8 million in their 1984 divorce.

Being married to money made her too snooty for her own good. I saw her on TV speaking of a interior decorating project of hers and she sniffed, "Oh, well...I only had a billion dollar budget!"

He has a horrid reputation - I know a few people that have worked for him.

When he comes into a room that one of his "workers" or "employees" are in they either have to turn around and face the wall or listen to him but they are not allow to look at him in the eye.

This man is crazy.

He also starts every day with a phone call to his rabbi.
