Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson got back together — at least for one night! In what was likely their first meeting since Dec. 15, when Nick pleaded with Jessica, 25, to not file divorce papers (she did anyway the next day), the pair reunited Jan. 4, when Nick showed up at the Valley Inn Restaurant & Bar in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where Jessica had been enjoying a quiet dinner with her sister Ashlee, dad, Joe, and mom, Tina.

"Nick slid into the booth next to Jessica and gave her a big hug and a kiss," says the source. "It was obvious they hadn't seen each other for a while. He was dreamy-eyed looking at her. Jessica seemed guarded at first but loosened up as the visit progressed."

Perhaps she was worried about how her papa, Joe, would handle the situation. After all, he famously feuded with his son-in-law for most of their last year of marriage. But it turns out business-minded Joe set up the meeting! Sources close to the Simpson family say the elder Simpson's office has been inundated with fan e-mails and letters pleading with the kaput couple to get back together. "Joe's shocked at how many people want to see Nick and Jess together again," says a Simpson insider. "He's worried that Jessica's fans will desert her because they blame her for the breakup."
