I could swear I've seen Mariah in fur over the years. I hate bandwagon-jumpers. More on the "fur issue" later.
Something about Mariah just doesn't cut it. I know people like her and she still sells millions of albums, but something about her "image" or "celebrity persona" just doesn't quite ring the bell. Ok,so she's got issues (who DOESN'T) but she comes across as awkward, her interviews seem forced, even smiling tabloid pics of her seem strained. She's tried on the "diva" image, but she's not really the "powerful" type. Sometimes she goes for that urban "I'm still Mariah from the block... everyone's homegirl..." but that doesn't quite fit either.
She has an amazing voice. Not my taste, those high dogwhistle notes make me cringe, but I give credit where credit is due. Like the Celines and Christinas, even the Whitneys - she really HAS the goods. What she LACKS is the AUTHENTICITY - and that "it factor" celebs have.
Celine's got that "aw shucks" unabashed "niceness", Christina was the tough, unapologetic sexpot, and Whitney has (had?) that Diana Ross diva-ness thing going on. Mariah... I dunno.
The most famous PERFORMERS are not necessarily great SINGERS.(early Madonna and Michael Jackson, Britney, now Ashlee - Beyonce straddles the line). It's about image, clothes and STYLE (Gwen, Avril, Kelly Osbourne?). How about Paris and Nicole, MK & Ashley, the celebrity-circuit "do-nothings" - famous for being famous. (Granted, MK & Ashley dabbled in acting and attach their name to assorted crap to add to their outrageous fortunes, but nowadays they are much more "celebrities" rather than actresses or designers). At least they ARE who they ARE, Paris happily holds herself out as Queen of the Skanks, and loves every second of it. She OWNS her "skank" like Courtney Love owns "lunatic dopefiend".
Ohhh yeah...Mariah! Forever tacky and garishly dressed. Never heard the words "less is more". Expensive, yet unflatteringly tight and obviously uncomfortable. When she's gained a few pounds, she goes right for "too short" and puts her thighs on display. You can't BUY class, and she has all the elegance of a NJ mob moll.
Rough life - unlucky in love and family problems. A sister, rumoured to have HIV and substance abuse problems who openly prostitutes herself on Craigslist as Mariah Carey's sister. Sad and embarrassing. But I digress...
Honey, you're TRYING too hard and you can smell it. Nobody else is going to believe you're great unless YOU believe it, too.
My own unpopular views on fur:
When I lived in LA, I was "anti-fur" - not PETA crazy, fur didn't "gross me out" but I do love animals. Adored my horse, but his saddle WAS leather... it's a slippery slope.
Years later in freezing Boston, I was unexpectedly gifted with a mink coat. I fell in love. I wanted to SLEEP in it, never wanted to take it off. I am ridiculously attached to my Italian Greyhound (mini - 9 lbs). Once asked how I could claim to "love" my dog (an animal) and still wear fur. I love my dog so much, I had a furrier custom-make a hooded mink coat FOR HER. How's THAT for loving animals?!
(Not JUST to look cute - Italian Greyhounds have short, fine hair and next to no body fat, and are always freezing. She's such a great dog, and I wanted her to be as cozy & comfortable outside as I am. It's warm but not bulky and is perfect for her. Oh yeah, and we match
My bottom line: Unless you're a VEGAN and DO NOT wear OR use LEATHER - then save your hypocritical anti-fur BS. It's the SAME THING.
YES. IT. IS.
