Default Haylie Duff's Maxim interview

Quote:
Dynamite Duff
Hilary’s big sister has gone from Napoleon Dynamite to shaking the pillars of 7th Heaven. Here’s why we didn’t vote for Pedro.

From the Farrely brothers to the Hiltons sisters, keeping it in the family pays off. Ask Haylie Duff. Once thought of merely as Hilary’s sister, she’s been carving out some impressive territory of her own. After scoring major cool points as a foil to our favorite mouth-breather, Napoleon Dynamite, she’s moved to T.V. and 7th Heaven, on which her conditions as a unwed teen mother (****!) gets the Christians all hot and bothered. Certain members of the TV-viewing public watch her performances with such intensity, however, that the line between fact and fiction had eluded them…

Are you worried playing a mother on 7th Heaven will make you the poster child for teen pregnancy?
I’ve definitely thought about that. I’ve even read a couple of articles that refer to my being pregnant that don’t make it clear it’s on the show. I’m going, “It’s only on the show! Trust me!” I’m wearing padding and prosthetics. My sister and I have always tried to do things that are positive and send a message. The message with this is that have to be aware of the choices that you’re making.

Besides the bun in the oven, how is this character different for you?
She allows me to be vulnerable and insecure. I’m not an insecure person. I’m vulnerable at times, but I’ve always had my mom and sister to talk to. This girl’s family isn’t there, and she’s dealing with this thing by herself. Also, she continues to after a guy who doesn’t like her. I’m a person who’s like, If he doesn’t like me, fine.

Do you have any advice for guys who want to hit on a celebrity?
Don’t come with all your game. Be normal. Approach her like you have respect for her. There are so many guys who come up and you’re thinking, You would’ve been cute if you hadn’t just said that. And don’t bust out camera phones! That’s another thing that can make a guy from cute to not cute at all.

Do you and Hilary have groupies?
You’d think you’d go to one of my sister’s shows and there’d be all these little girls, but there’s a movement of adults guys who come with Duff girls are hot signs. It’s neat to see older guys come out to her shows.

By “neat,” do you mean “creepy.”
No, they’re usually the coolest ones to meet at the meet-and-greets, because they always make stuff for us, like t-shirts.

Isn’t hating your cute younger sister your obligations as an older sibling?
Everyone tries to put us against each other. But we never had that, even when we were younger. She played sports; I went to ballet class. We were never competitive. We lived out in Texas hill country, so far a long time it was just her and me. We’ve been best friends our whole life.

Your mom’s a producer, so were you born into the show-biz life?
My mom actually wasn’t in the business until we were. We all got into it together. We had a manager at the time who said, “Yeah, I have auditions set up,” but when we came out here to Los Angeles, she had nothing and she never answered her phone. And the she changed her number! So my mom said, “We’re out here. If we’re going to do this, let’s go buy some books.”

Next thing you know, you’re stars. We should look into the “reading” thing. How do you and Hilary feel about being lumped in with other “sister acts”?

We haven’t thought about it. When we were doing Ice Breakers Liquid Ice commercials or endorsements, we never looked at it like people were going to think we did everything together. Some people look at Jessica and Ashlee Simpson or the Olsen twins or whoever and kind of instantly lump them together. It breaks my heart that we now have to think, Maybe we can’t do this together because we just did this…

So what exactly did you and Hilary do to piss off Lindsay Lohan?
First of all, that was a very one-sided thing driven from her side. Hilary and I would read things or people would ask us about it, and we’d say, “We’re not those kinds of girls.” We’re not the girls who want to be fighting people. We’re not Hollywood in the sense that we don’t run with that whole crowd. We aren’t in that whole group that goes out all the time, doing all the clubs.

No chance of a rumble then?
Between Hilary and Lindsay? Oh, no. that would be horrible. Lindsay told an Australian magazine that she called me to say, “I want to hang out with you and Hil” and “Sorry” and all this stuff, and I hung up on her! That’s the most recent one. That totally did not happen . I would never hang up on her. Just because we’re not in the same crowd doesn’t mean id be mean to her. It’s strange. It’s like one person says something and the magazines don’t even call to find out if it’s remotely true.

Do you avoid people in “the business” when you’re not working?
I do. All my closet friends aren’t actors. My boyfriend’s not an actor. One of my best friends, her dad has been in the music business for a lone time, so she’s unimpressed with everything. Within my first week of having a license, I got a ticket for reckless driving.

How reckless?
I got caught going 65 mph in Laurel Canyon., which is not good. I said, “ I have a meeting that I’m late for.” I cried. I tried everything I could to get out of it. But he didn’t care.

Since you were in Napoleon Dynamite, we feel you’re qualified to tell hipsters to stop wearing vote for Pedro shirts.
I know. Efren Ramirez and I laugh about it. He says, “Everyone loves my vote for Pedro shirts more than vote for summer shirts!”

How did you wind up in that movie?
They sent me a story breakdown, and my mom said, “this is so weird.” I read it and thought, I want to do this movie so bad. When we were filming it, sometimes we’d look at each other and go, “How is this ging to play out? This light be really bad.” but it’s a classic comedy. I think you have to watch it a couple of times to really get it.

Any weird on-set stories?
I got heatstroke during the part where uncle Rico hands us flyers for breast enhancement. It was so hot, and we had been outside since five in the morning. I remember looking at him, and he’s saying his lines, and I just passed out. I think it’s on a blooper reel somewhere. We were in this very Mormon neighborhood, and they thought I was this crazy girl on drugs or something.

Do you have a dream role?
I don’t know the role yet, but I want to do what Joey Richardson is doing on Nip/Tuck. I see roles like the ones Charlize Theron gets to play, such as North Country and Monster, where people view her roles as someone other than who she is. Just real roles. Real women. I think over-the-top stuff is easy. It’s kind of a cop-out.

Would you see yourself doing nudity for this dream role?

I can’t see myself ever doing nudity.

On behalf of your male fans, why not?
I feel it can be so gratuitous and not necessary for the story. I see movies where they’ll just flash to a woman’s boob and you think, Why was that important? How did that enhance the story at all?

We don’t follow you.
Its been done. I say get creative with other stuff. Nudity is kind of a cop-out too.

So, in your words, your fans will just have to get used to seeing you as you are on these pages.
I told my grandma that I was going to be in Maxim, and she said, “Isn’t that a dirty men’s magazine?” And I was like, “Uh… yeah…”

Thanks for sticking up for us.
No, I think it’s cool. When I got the call to do this, I went, “Are you sure?” I don’t think about myself that way, so it’s kind of weird, but it’s cool at the same time. It’s neat that, as a girl, we can do cool stuff and then vamp it up and be sexy.

Ugh, is she confusing herself with her sister?
DistressedJeans is so right on with the "Haylie VanDyke" comparison!

I found it pretty amusing that she claims she and Hilary lived in the Texas Hill Country. They lived in the city of Houston, Texas and went to school with several of my friends.

This is such a non-sequitur:

Do you avoid people in “the business” when you’re not working?

What does getting a ticket have to do with avoiding people in the business? There's lots to bitch about when it comes to this coattails riding horse, but for some reason that non-sequitur annoyed the hell out of me!

I was confused by that too... she's an idiot. I guess she was trying to imply that since she's a "celebrity" it was cool for her to have such a "normal" experience like getting a ticket. I really don't know...

I think she sounds pretty normal in the interview...it's kinda gotta suck to have a younger (supposedly prettier) more famous sister and be considered the ugly one. Just based on this interview alone I'd say she has Paris or Lindsey beat in the brains dept.
