Zellweger to adopt African child?
Quote:
RENEE Zellweger is joining Angelina Jolie on her next visit to Africa because she wants the Tomb Raider beauty to help her adopt a needy child.
The Bridget Jones star, 36, is desperate for a baby, but has no-one to have it with after her four-month marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney, 37, was annulled last month.
So she has contacted super-mum Angelina, 30, who has adopted Cambodian tot Maddox, four, and Ethiopian baby Zahara.
Angelina has agreed to take Renée to Ethiopia where there are five million orphans. A source at the country’s state-run adoption agency said: "She still has to meet the same 10 conditions as everybody else.
"The main two are that she’s financially secure and law-abiding."

Zellweger to adopt African child?
I think it is extemely ugly and juvenile to equate adoption with "buying a child." I have 2 adopted children and I am adopted myself. There are millions of children in this world who are already here and need homes. Why not praise these people for giving a homeless child a home instead of giving birth. Heap scorn on them for other things sure, but not for adoption. I just find the "buying a child" in extremely poor taste. JMHO,
Desiree

^ They're just making fun of Angelina Jolie and not knocking adoption itself, which I agree is a terrific thing for kids and parents alike.
How wonderful that you've opened your home to two children who otherwise wouldn't have known a mom's love. Rock on!

I agree. Perhaps she meant though that because they have money, they move to the head of the line for adoption. They are able to "buy" a child instead of having to wait like everyone else.

I think that's more about status and special treatment, though... not about literally "buying" babies.

Zellweger to adopt African child?
I have just read it here and regarding Angelina Jolie. There is already a perception that when you adopt a child, you are buying them. There are unfortunately a lot of expenses involved, ie adoption agency fees, travel, home studies, background checks, etc, but you are paying for services. I just don't feel it is appropriate to say children are commodities, ie for sale. Whether I like these actesses or not, I really commend them for opening their homes and hearts to orphaned children. And if they can bring an awareness towards adoption, then even better. From what I understand because of AJ, there have been MANY inquiries into Etheopian adoptions. That many more children may get a family of their own. How cool is that!!

From contactmusic.com and femalefirst.co.uk:
Quote:
ANGELINA JOLIE's adoption of an Ethiopian orphan has given hope to thousands more parentless children, because her example has sparked a huge interest in adoption.
Agencies in Ethiopia have been flooded with calls because hopeful parents in America are now considering giving homes to other children from the African nation.
Earlier this summer (05), Jolie adopted ZAHARA MARLEY, giving her four-year-old Cambodian son MADDOX a sibling.
And since setting up home with the little girl in the US, interest in adoption rates in Ethiopia have surged among the four US agencies that arrange adoptions in the poverty-stricken country.
CHERYL CARTER-SHOTTS, director of Americans For African Adoption, says, "We began to be flooded with calls and emails from people wanting information."
Meanwhile, Adoption Advocates International reports that requests have doubled since Jolie's journey to Ethiopia.
VICKI PETERSON, director of Wide Horizons For Children, which Jolie used, notes, "It's very exciting to give these children a future."

I saw another article the other day that said some people are specifically citing Angelina as their inspiration when they inquire into ethiopian adoption.

See, I don't know if AJ got any special treatment since I am not familiar with Etheopia's and Cambodia's adoption programs. She seems like a devoted mother though. She seems very hands on and I would doubt she would have adopted again if it was for status. Like she KNOWS how much work kids are!

By status I meant... her status as a rich celeb may have gotten her some special treatment, gotten things sped along, red tape cut, etc. But why be rich and famous if it doesn't have perks? I'd be perfectly happy to have the red tape removed from all procedures if I were a big star. I think most of us would enjoy some of that.

Of course they are inspired, but it doesn't change the fact that Angelina JOlie IMHO is only buying these children. Is she not the same one that I hear is planning on getting a child from the last Earthquake. Her fake-ass doesn't give 2 shits, all she cares is all the publicity it gets her. Think about it, the more natural and man-made disasters, the more seemingly poor children she can adopt...........alas.............She'd be the worlds very 1st WonderMom..........I'm sorry I don't buy it.
At the lady talking about adoption, guess what, I was adopted as well. My parents never threw me a freaking welcome to America party, my parents, Thanks goodness they weren't famous, but even if they were,I don't think they'd ever have used me for puiblicity.
And what does Renee Zellweger getting an adopted kid tell you??? It tells you flat out that it's about to become the hottest thing in Holllywood, since you can't have a baby, why not get supermom AJ to help you bargain the price......oops, sorry I meant the high fees to get one from Africa. Where you get to choose the most healthy kid among the bunch, God forbid that while you are in Ethiopia trying to make a choice, there is a healthy child whose parents recently died from the quake in Pakistan....because oh, you"d be there in such a jiffy to save that poor little thing.
Why don't people see these celebs for the egotistics pricks that they are ....geez!! Gobble gobble gobble.........These people have been in a position that they always are looking out for their asses, now Reneee will turn around from psycho-weird-stalkerrella to "wow, she saved a child from Ethiopia, wonderful, we can now crown her mother Theresa III of course only behind Vangilina Jolina"

Angelina didn't adopt a healthy child from Ethiopia... she was very sick and they weren't even sure if she had HIV or not.

A very good friend of mine just adopted a little boy, born in Jan 2005 from Ethiopia. He has Down Syndrome. She specifically requested a special needs child because her brother has Down Syndrome and wanted knew there were many children that needed homes w/various situations. She heard that in Africa if a child is born w/Down Syndrome, they will (sometimes) stone it, or institutionalize it---meaning tie it to a crib and let it sit there, and have no life what so ever. He is absolutely adorable and is a delight. She and her husband (and her birth daughter) are thrilled to have him as part of their family. It was a huge hassle to go through, but well worth it in her eyes.
