Default Van Damme, Aishwarya Rai to star in Asterix film

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai is tipped to act in the new Asterix and Obelix film, which has also in the cast martial arts star Jean Claude van Damme.

An entirely new part may be written for the Indian star in the film version of 'Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games', which does not have any main female characters.

There is no news about what role would Aishwarya Rai play in the film, which is slated for release in 2007 or 2008 coinciding with the Beijing Olympics.
Does this fall into the "would you believe", or "who cares" category?

Asterix is a french cartoon about a heroic little gaul who ingenoiusly repels Roman invasion with the help of his enormous, good natured Sgt Schultz of a side kick, Obelix. Hope it works out for Ms Rai! I can't really picture her in Asterix, though it's only a matter of scripting. Captive foreign princess perhaps?

It'll never ever be as good as "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".

Who on earth would Van Damme be? That just doesn't bode well for the film, which worries me to begin with (live action Asterix movie?????)

I think it would be the "who cares" category. Van Damm movies were fun to watch in the 80's though. He had like a ballerina style kick. Didn't he like used to be a gymnist?

If you think it's crazy, you ain't seen a thing. Just wait until we're goin down in flames.

PANAJI: Get ready to hear Asterix and Obelix spewing invectives in Punjabi as Reni Goscinny's immortal characters venture into unchartered territory for a French film in India.

"We are even planning to dub the movie into Punjabi apart from English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu," the distributor of "Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra" in India, Inderjeet Singh told reporters. The French blockbuster was premiered at the International Film Festival of India here on Friday night.

"The movie will be released around Christmas time and is targeted at family audiences," Singh said.

The first movie in the Asterix series had been a huge success in Tamil Nadu and Singh said he hoped the new French blockbuster will also work wonders across India.

This time, no Bollywood stars have lent their voices for the movie. "We want audiences to concentrate on the movie, not listen to the voices of the stars," Singh said.

"Interestingly, the English version of the film will be some 15 minutes shorter than the other dubbed versions. This is so because some sequences in the film had been cut keeping the US audience in mind," he said.

According to Etienne Dubaille of director Alain Chabat's Chezwam company, the French embassy had created a special fund for dubbing its movies.

"France will share 50 per cent of the costs for dubbing the movie, which costs us around Rs four lakh. As for publicity, the French National Centre of cinematography will chip in for us," Singh said.
