Will Britney Spears sit out MTV VMAs while Justin Timberlake takes center stage?

Will Britney Spears do it?

I’m talking about the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 9 in Las Vegas.

As I reported first, Spears may be the opening act of the big shindig. Then Mindfreak illusionist Criss Angel confirmed my exclusive when he told People magazine he’s working with Spears on the gig.

Well, now things may have hit a snag. I’m told talks between Spears and MTV may have cooled, and the embattled pop princess may not appear after all.

Guess who else has apparently been in talks to perform? Spears’ ex Mr. Justin Timberlake.

Timberlake and Beyoncé have the most nominations this year, with seven apiece.

Timberlake’s rep confirmed he’ll be attending the VMAs but referred questions about a possible performance to MTV. A rep for MTV did not comment.

This isn’t J.T.’s only possible upcoming awards-show gig. As I first reported last week, Timberlake and funnyman Andy Samberg are in talks to perform their Saturday Night Live “Dick in a Box” skit at the Emmys on Sept. 16.

The racy number is nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

What the hell- I have to admire her tenacity, she's such a laughing stock nowadays, the last thing you'd expect her to do is perform at the VMAS in front of millions of people. She's another one whose time is up.

Maybe she can hit up Madonna for another make-out session. I loved how the camera went to Justins face in the audience after that- it was priceless. And because the camera was there, the Christina-Madonna kiss didn't get focused on.

Maybe Criss Angel can help her. He is an illusionist. Making her look like a professional entertainer is going to be his biggest challenge. As much as I dislike her, I kind of want to see her pull it off and shock everyone.

Well, Justin and Britney would be in the same room, and Justin would come over with Good Charlotte (new friends, they just toured together) and Hilary (who is there year after year) would fight with Nicole Richie who would after go with Brody Jenner (a new friend of Duff) in the bathroom to have sex/tell him he's the dad of the baby. And then, Joel would enter in the bathroom, see and hear everything and freak out. Wow ! It's gonna be a great night !

I highly doubt JT would share the spotlight with Brit.
