Arthur Miller's deleted Down Syndrome son
Arthur Miller was in terrible denial about his Down Syndrome son.
Daniel Day-Lewis is brother-in-law to Miller's son and was appalled
by Miller's actions.

That is horrible, no man would keep me from keeping my child.

What a tortured man he must have been. What a great loss. Danny could have added so much joy.

That is just plain awful! How could a parent do that?

From what I remember reading, Miller was no prince to Marilyn Monroe either.

Aside from feeling sorry for Danny, I feel sorry for Daniel Day-Lewis. What a family he married into. I don't know how Miller's wife could have just gone along with institutionalizing her son. What a shallow man he actually was.

I'm 56, when I was a little girl I had an uncle who was retarted. We called it Mongoloid then, and he lived at home with my grandmother and geandfatherfather. There was never any discussion of him being in a home, so it was not unprecedented. He should have been shamed and outed by family and friends.

They should dig him up and let him rot in the street.
On a side note. Maybe I'm showing my age here. But I can not think of Daniel Day-Lewis. Without thinking of that old In Living Color skit with Jim Carrey called My Left Foot of Fury.

^^I didn't see that but when I think of DDL, I think of him as he was in Last of the Mohicans. He should have stayed that way, always.

back in the day- when his son was born..it was often encouraged to put "those types" of children away...it was easier for the parents, the time, the society...as a proud parent of a downs syndrome child..i am appauled and i do think its outrageous to think of, but this is also a different era.

It seems Arthur Miller was adept at making more than one person feel unhappy and forgotten. It's astonishing his neglected son has turned out so well.
