Nicole Richie and Joel Madden engaged?

''Are congratulations again in order for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden?

After a late Friday night performance with his band Good Charlotte at the Hot 99.5 Lil' Black Dress Party hosted by Perez Hilton at the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, Va., Madden was walking offstage when Hot 99.5 morning show deejay Kane announced to the crowd, "He got engaged yesterday. Congratulations, Joel!"

To that, Madden quickly glanced back over his shoulder but was otherwise unresponsive as he made a hurried exit from the stage behind brother Benji.

"We heard this morning," Kane told PEOPLE following Good Charlotte's 40-minute set. Crediting he got the word from "good sources," Kane said he hadn't seen Richie since hearing the news, but added he had offered his congratulations to Madden earlier in the night. "He said, 'Thank you so much,'" recalled Kane.

"They're very excited about the baby and the wedding. They want to keep their personal life personal," he added.

While there were no sightings of Richie at the party, she and Madden, who are expecting their first child together, were spotted touring Washington, D.C., earlier in the day.

The pair, along with entourage in tow, popped into Nathans of Georgetown restaurant for a late lunch before making their way to the upscale Georgetown baby boutique Dawn Price Baby.''

... Maybe Joel tought the congradulations were made about the baby news ? ...

I give this marriage a year, but I doubt they will even survive being engaged to each other for a month.

I doubt they can last ... For the moment, the baby news are making everything look good between them but as soon as the life will be normal again, they'll face it.

How did she end up with this guy? Seems like such a loser, everyone isn't calling him a douche by accident, or for no reason. I've heard more than a couple of accounts where he ends up really pissed, nasty, and his panties in a bunch.

He seems to have no sense of humor and to take himself, his celeb status, his shitty music, WAY too seriously. Just def. not the kind of person I'd imagine a girl like Nicole Richie ending up with. Remember when she was with DJ AM, she was smiling so big in almost all pictures, she seemed truly happy. Now she barely smiles at all and seems uncomfortable with Madden. She may be a lot of things, but I still feel badly that her baby is fathered by a douchebag.

I had this conversation with a friend just last week. IMO you don't have to get married because you are pregnant. Sure, it is the honorable thing to do, but it isn't a must now. I guess I am a glass half empty kinda gal, but if you want to get married, wait and make sure they are even going to carry to term. Cold, yes, but honest. Say a man wants to do the right thing but he isn't really sure he wants to get married. Does it anyway and she miscarries. Now, does he divorce her? Or stay with her?
I guess I just have a different outlook on it...if you love someone enough to marry them, marriage talk would have come up before...not just all of a sudden that you are pregnant you have to get married. In some cases I think that living together is much better than marriage. You can be a father to a child and not be married to the mother...

It won't last. Besides the fact that I feel he's too much of a self absorbed asshole to stay in a healthy, committed relationship, I think that Nicole being visibly pregnant will freak him out because she won't look like a 12 year old girl anymore. And that seems to be the look he goes for.

To me it looks like they're not engaged ... Look at the first picture. There is no ring in sight ! By the way, it was taken a few days after the rumors started spreading around.

** It seems like Joel is much more happy and himself when Nicole's not around. ( She was back in LA when those picture were taken )**
