Elton John, Partner Plan Civil Union
LONDON - Elton John says he and his partner David Furnish plan a small private ceremony to seal their civil partnership under new legislation offering gays many of the legal protections available to married heterosexuals.
"It'll be a very small family affair and then in the evening there'll be a soiree somewhere, which we have yet to work out," John was quoted as saying in an interview with Attitude magazine released Thursday.
"But the ceremony itself will be David's parents and my parents and the two of us. They'll be our witnesses. That's the way we want to do it. They've been so fantastic to us and so supportive. Out of respect for their support, we want to just keep it small. Not to make a ballyhoo of the ceremony," John was quoted as saying.
The ceremony will be held on Dec. 21, the effective date of the legislation creating civil partnerships.
Furnish, a Canadian-born filmmaker, and John have been together for 12 years.
"As far as I'm concerned, I've always considered myself committed to Elton and he's the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with. So in that sense I don't feel like the dynamic of our relationship is going to change," Furnish was quoted as saying.
"But from a social standpoint, I think it's hugely significant. It is a major, major change. It is one of the defining issues of our times. And I applaud Britain for embracing the diversity of our society."

I wonder if Elton's going to make David sign a prenup? And of course, by marrying Sir Elton, David can now call himself Lady John.

^^ Actually, David Furnish isn't that old. And I can think of thousands of worse things: famine, war, children and others dying of easily preventible and curable diseases, child and animal abuse -- to name just a few.
Why shouldn't they get married if that's what they want to do? It doesn't offend me at all. They've been a couple for a loooong time. I say good for them.

Ummmm....because they're both men?
They may go thru some sort of ceremony but they won't be married....

I don't know anything about this David Furnish, but good luck to him, because Sir Elton seems to have gotten a tad bit snippy & cranky lately. Elton seems like he would be impossible to please.

Re: Elton John, Partner Plan Civil Union
^^ The fact that they're both men doesn't bother me at all. Homophobia and intolerance bother me a whole lot more. Those attitudes don't really fly with me. There is so much misery in the world that if two people love one another, who am I to stand in their way? It's none of my business.
And in Canada, they WOULD be legally married.

I'm not homophobic because I said marriage was for a male and female....male and female, man and wife. Husband and wife....kindof the way it goes, at least when you discuss marriage.
But let's not make this thread another boring political discussion...I'd rather discuss Elton's tantrums...

Amen, PB. With all of the horrible hurtful things going on around us every day, I will never understand why some people choose to focus their energies on persecuting people in love.
Edit: So we can get back on track, what was it that Elton called those reporters in the airport? Where was he? Not to mention what he said about Madonna. I love him for that.

Re: Elton John, Partner Plan Civil Union
He was at Tokyo airport, but I can't remember what he said. He does throw tantrums because he's a bad, spoiled diva. But at least he admits it. He even allowed bad behavior to be filmed for a documentary Furnish made about him a few years ago.
His partner is originally from Kelowna, BC -- not all that far from Vancouver. Elton performed a concert there a couple of years ago to raise money for charity, and as a tribute to Furnish.
He's one of the very few performers who puts his money where his mouth is. He's raised millions for AIDS, and NEVER charges a fee when he performs at his own or others' charity events. Most celebs charge outrageous amounts, all the while reaping good publicity by "donating" their time to a worthy cause. And most never cough up a dime of their own. Elton may be a diva, but he cares about the less fortunate.

Well, I can forgive him for whatever tantrums he throws because of Rocket Man.

Yeah, well maybe in your backwards country.
Hey guess what, 300 years ago the woman would have been the mans PROPERTY too.. not really a wife, more like a posession. Boy, its too bad women married today aren't REALLY married given that they arent property anymore.
Marriage changes, like everything else. Keep up, or die off.

Re: Elton John, Partner Plan Civil Union
The man has written some damn fine songs. What's that one with the lyric -- "How wonderful life is when you're in the world?" That was one of the songs I danced to at my wedding. And I don't generally like sappy love songs, but this one is just charming and heartfelt.
Just looked it up. "Your Song:"
It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can, easily hide
I don't have much money, but , boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where, we both could live
If I was a sculpter, but then again no
or a man who make potions for a travelling show
well I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you
Chorus:
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but, now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, when you're in the world/end Chorus
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
well a few of the verses, well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind, well, I wrote down this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
you see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen
Repeat chorus, repeating last three lines of it, twice
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but, now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, when you're in the world
