50 Cent not welcome in Canada
Quote:
Hip-hop star 50 CENT could be banned from performing in Canada next month (DEC05), if a crusading gun-crime politician has his way.
The IN DA CLUB hitmaker - real name CURTIS JACKSON - faces opposition for allegedly promoting gun violence, both in his rap lyrics as well as with new film GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'.
And MP DAN McTEAGUE fears that his upcoming tour, which kicks off in Vancouver on 3 December (05), will incite gangland brawls and potentially escalate the recent wave of fatal shootings in the country.
He is lobbying for 50 Cent - whose criminal record forces him to obtain official permission before entering Canada - to be refused entry.
McTeague says, "This is not a question of censorship. This is a question of trying to protect impressionable young men in our communities who are being destroyed in the prime of their lives.
"I don't think the people of Toronto want to hear Mr Jackson's harmful message right now."
Gun crime and gang wars have claimed 49 lives in Toronto alone this year (05). 50 Cent's last concert in the city in 2003 was marred by a fatal shooting outside the theatre, while his gig in Montreal prompted brawls.

Re: 50 Cent not welcome in Canada
See, there's a direct corrolation between gangsta rap, gun culture and impressionable black teens who are presently blowing the hell out of each other here every day in Toronto for the last year. You can't even walk downtown (which used to be safe) without fear of being shot now.
I'm not against censorship really, but it's a bit different in this case given the DIRECT link between this guy's crap-ass music, and the lifestyle he pushes and the gang violence linked to it. It's not the cause, but it's a pretty hefty factor. You want to bet a few people would get blown away at his stupid concert here in Toronto.
The sad part is, most people in the black community won't give info to the cops if they're witnesses to someone getting popped. It's fucking stupid.
On top of that, the minimum sentence for gun crime in this country is ridiculously low. Anybody caught using a gun, in my opinion, should be thrown in jail with a life sentence, period.

You wouldn't find a Klan rally here either, cuz they'd be tossed in jail for enciting hatred.
I fail to see the diff between that, and advocating wholesale slaughter in a song.

Go scream that you'd like to kill the president of the united states in front of the white house, then see how free your speech is.

Re: 50 Cent not welcome in Canada
correlating 50 Cent's music to child porn? Cindy Sheehan's comments are inciteful, and hurts the best interests of the country - yet she is free to do what she wants. As is 50Cent in the USA. I find it funny that people in other countries continually ridicule the USA for its policies - yet accept the policies in their own country.

what I'm trying to say is "free speech" as a blanket statement for anyone doing what they want isn't a great argument.
he has a criminal record and can be refused entry to Canada. there was another celeb (who was white and female) who had this issue as well.

Inciteful to what, affect political change? Oh heavens!
best interests of the country? In who's opinion, yours? What are the best interests of the country, exactly? Decided by whom? Enforced by whom?

don't be simplistic - no one's correlating 50 cent's music to child porn, just using it as an example of limitations some countries place on free speech. some countries enacted laws against racism and incitation of hatred, effectively putting limits on the extent of free speech.
