Singer R Kelly to be tried for child pornography

Grammy Award-winning R&B singer R Kelly will go on trial September 17 on child pornography charges, five years after the accusations were first made, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Kelly, 40, whose real name is Robert Kelly, faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl. Prosecutors have said the girl could have been as young as 13, but defense attorneys have disputed her age and whether Kelly is on the tape. The underground videotape was widely circulated.

Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charges and in the interim has released hit songs, gone on tours, and released a DVD set of "hip-hopera" skits.

Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan said jury selection would begin September 17.

The trial was delayed, in part, by arguments over when the video was made. It was also pushed back because the judge fell and broke bones and needed to recuperate.

The justice system is abysmally slow. A friend of mine was murdered July of last year and the guy who did it is still walking around free. The damn thing hasn't even gone to court yet!

Couple things struck me about this article.

First: He's 40???? That I wouldn't have guessed, thought he was more in his early 30's. But then again, I am not a fan of his and really don't care.

Second: What the hell took so long??? Thought they had some hard core evidence on him. Meantime, he's making money and having a great time.

Third: Wasn't he secretly married to that singer that died in the small plane crash in 2001?? I cannot spell her name w/o completely butchering it, Alliyeah or something. They were divorced when she died, but weren't the secretly married and did so when SHE was underage???? Why don't they ever talk about that?

Yeah, I remember him and Aliyeah. I remember hearing about it on the radio when I was like 17 or 18. There was a big "yes they are, no they aren't" married debate. We were all grossed out, cause she was like 15ish at the time.

Thank you, Fabularosa. He was a very sweet man who absolutely didn't deserve it. The whole town was in shock. This is one of the reasons I don't believe in karma or 'what goes around, comes around'.

The judicial system is very slow here too. It's just that with the R Kelly case, it's very high profile and the evidence was undeniable-I was under the impression it had already been dealt with, actually, I'm kind of shocked that it was left hanging for five years.

I cannot stand RKelly and then to see him gallavanting all around doing music and stuff, wtf? The Dixie Chicks got boycotted over political views,death threats all kinds of stuff, but this perverted skeeze bucket has been walking around for what like 2 or 3 years free, hasn't he?
