MATT DAMON has become the latest movie star to buy a hybrid car after his family urged him to stop guzzling gas and turn environmental.

Damon has joined a growing list of celebrities, including LEONARDO DiCAPRIO and TOM HANKS, who have made greener car choices.

But Damon insists he's not trying to be part of an environmental trend among his peers - he just wanted to save money at the petrol pump.

He explains, "I just have one for my own personal reasons. I don't have a car in New York but I just got a place in Florida and we (himself and fiancee LUCIANA BARROSO) got a car there and it's a hybrid.

"You don't need all that car. I don't need a Suburban (sports utility vehicle) to drive myself around. It seems to make common sense to me.

"My father drives one, my brother drives one. They're like, 'Why would you ever drive a regular car?' There's no reason to. These cars are just as good, they're just as fast and they use less gas, so I don't understand why everyone isn't driving one."

Call me a snob but I'll buy one when they're not so butt-ugly. I'm still waiting for the Smarte Car to come to the states. That Honda Hybrid looks like a wireless mouse, for Pete's sake.

Besides, my MINI is top in its class for fuel efficiency, I'm really not one of the bad guys.

You have to realize my first car was a Honda Del Sol. So I have a soft spot for cars that resemble jelly beans.

I got to drive the first Smart Car to be imported into australia while my dad worked for Mercedes Benz. They're really freaky to drive. I kept glancing in the rearvision mirror and going 'ah! half my car is missing!' that said, they drive a little like a motorbike and you cant park them just about anywhere you want.

I'm with miss Perfect. I'll get a hybrid when they design better lines for them. Just because they have new technology doesnt mean they have to look 'futuristic'.

I have a Smart and I LOOOOOVE it. It's the greatest lil car ever

The Toyota Prius isn't so ugly. Anyway, Damon's family talks some sense, he will probably need a little more time to understand it's not what it saves of his money that matters most.
