Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
Johnny Depp has vowed to defy any smoking ban imposed in Britain and attacks similar enforcements in his native America. The actor, who is thought to have a home in the south of England, has cut down on his nicotine habit, but believes smokers should be allowed to quit on their own, without being alienated. He threatens, "I'll come over and have a smoke-a-thon. They've taken that whole pretzel and stretched it into as absurd pretzel as I've ever seen. Obviously it ain't good for you, and I don't condone it or recommend it, but everyone has to find their own way out of it. The idea of bludgeoning people and telling them that if they smoke they are awful is ludicrous."
from imdb
I hope this guy means he will defy smoking only in his own space

Fuck you Depp. The monkey on YOUR back can kill OTHER people. Maybe if you weren't such a selfish twat you could see that.
Keep your smoke to yourself, thanks. Dipshit.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
I will allow that there is something incredibly selfish and obnoxious about smoking in a general sense, but everybody doesn't want to be a part of this fascist utopia.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
Being in a room with someone who's drinking doesn't increase your chances of getting liver disease. That's a stupid comparison.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
drinking kills just as many people, innocent or not, as smoking does.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
Sure, but compare this:
people who drink, then go out and accidentally kill people due to intoxication in a car (which is about like 0000000.2% of people who drink during a day)
and
People who die every year from a smokers nasty habit that, unfortunately, they cant keep to themselves.
People want to smoke, fine. I don't really care until their carcinogens start being inhaled by me. If they could keep that shit entirely in their own bodies i wouldnt give a fuck, they can pay thousands of dollars to kill themselves over a long period of time. Its just too bad they also drain money out of the health care system as a result of their stupidity affecting themselves and innocents around them.

all this can be said about alcoholics too.
i just think this smoking ban is getting way ridiculous. whether a facility allows smoking or not should be up to the owner. and they're gonna ban smoking in bars too? thats so stupid to me. non-smokers will bitch that they don't want to be in a bar full of smoke b/c it's unhealthy but they don't however have a problem with ingesting alcohol? b/c we all know alcohol is soooo healthy right? hypocrites.

Smoking is illegal in some cases, which is the whole point of this thread. He wants to "defy a smoking ban", which would be breaking the law.
And it doesn't make a lot of sense to compare drinking alcohol with smoking cigarettes, when placed in the context of causing harm to others. If I have one drink, it does not automatically render me incapable of basic human functions, make me violent, or cause me to kill other people with a motor vehicle. The smoke of one cigarette, conversely, does do harm to those around. What you mean to be comparing, I guess, is violent and destructive intoxication with smoking - and public drunkenness and driving under the influence are already illegal, so it seems to be taken care of.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
They banned smoking in all indoor places here in Ontario, because why should people be forced to breathe that crap in while they work in a bar or restaurant, tending tables? Why should their profession force them to get sick because of someone elses fucking nasty addiction that they cant keep to themselves?
Fact: Turning on a diesel engine and leaving it running for an HOUR inside a closed garage still will not equal the amount of pollutants and carcinogens from one cigarette if you leave it burn down to the filter in the same garage. The air after the cigarette is 100 times worse for you.
THAN A DIESEL ENGINE.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
ok i guess i agree with you about the people working breathing that stuff in. and no it's not a horrible thing to have to go outside to smoke so people don't have to breath it. that's fine. i'm not trying to say i think smoking's healthy. i just don't like how people whine b/c smoking is so bad for you but they'll go drink a bottle of 80 proof alcohol and think it's any different.

Re: Depp Threatens To Break Smoke Ban
people who claim they have "the right to smoke in public" is the stupiest thing I have ever heard. in my province, also in Canada, smoking is banned in all public places. it's great. people who feel they have the right to pollute other people's air and possibly give them cancer from second hand smoke are fucking ignorant and selfish. saying that it is "your right" to smoke where you want is idiotic when it is harming other people.
no offence to anyone!

80 proof alcohol your body can break down because it's a few simple chemicals, mostly grain derived.
Cigarettes have about 4000 toxic chemicals in them, and new ones are created by the combustion. That garbage accumulates in your body.. benzyne, formaldehyde, cyanide...and about 50 other INDUSTRIAL pollutants.
