Isaiah Washington Fired for slurs

Isaiah Washington has lost his job on the hit ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," five months after creating a furor with his use of an anti-gay slur. Washington's contract option was not renewed for next season, series producer ABC Television Studios said Thursday. "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," Washington said in a statement released through his publicist, Howard Bragman, without elaboration. He drew fire after using the anti-gay epithet backstage at the Golden Globe Awards in January while denying he'd used it previously on the set against cast mate T.R. Knight. Gay rights groups and cast member Katherine Heigl, who publicly denounced Washington, were among his most vocal critics. "This is something that will have changed the scope of his life," Heigl told Entertainment Weekly last month. Washington was "sorry and embarrassed" for the mistake, she said. Washington tried to make amends and said he was seeking therapy. He also met with officials from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and filmed a public service announcement in which he said "words have power" to hurt or heal. The May finale of "Grey's Anatomy" opened the door for the departure of his character.

I don't even watch the show, but it sounds like they did the right thing. It's not like he's irreplaceable, either. They can hire another dude to take his role.

I never understood what/why people have such a hatred of gay people.

You think he'd relate to the struggle of another "minority".

He would probably need to film said kiss for porn. I have a feeling it might be the only career he will have left....lol

Good for them for doing what is right. He is an absolute asshole and deserves this. Man, what a day. PH back in jail and now this!

I totally agree with you. No tolerance for intolerance! I don't understand hatred at all. It's such a waste of emotion.

I figured that this was coming, and he deserved to be fired. As a black man, I know if somebody made a racist statement on the job, I'd want them fired. No matter what your color, race, gender, or sexual orientation, you don't get a free pass to discriminate. Period.

Exactly! I don't tolerate people attacking one another. Sometimes, when in a group, you'll hear other people laugh because they are uncomfortable with the words being said and I'll think to myself: C'mon people, have the courage to stand up for one another! I'm over-the-top vocal so I'll put an end to insults, pronto. I don't care who you are; you aren't insulting anyone in my presence (especially not under the guise of a "joke") and if you don't like that then as the saying goes, don't let the door slam you on your ass on your way out. No one benefits from ignorance.

What IW did was uncalled for. Dragging someone from the closet is totally disgusting. He is disgraceful and who would want to work with him ever again?

Remember, Michael's attempt at Diversity Day? That had to be the funniest episode of that show.

And you're right about the attitude toward gays in the black and latin communities, to an extent. But that attitude is found in all communities, regardless of race. As far as I'm concerned, to each his or her own.

But a friend of mine who is a high school teacher told me today about how two students, both males, got caught having sex in the school, and they got stuck and had to be taken to the hospital. One was black and the other hispanic, so go figure.
