Cuba Gooding Jr. is used to playing the hero on film, but on Memorial Day he was put to the test in real life.
Gooding went to pick up dinner for his family at Roscoe's House of Chicken 'n' Waffles in Hollywood when he came upon an apparent gunshot victim, the
New York Daily News reports.
The actor, who stars in the upcoming
Hero Wanted with Ray Liotta, was sitting in his car outside the restaurant "when he heard four gunshots," a source tells the paper.
According to the source, Gooding, 39, "saw a young kid holding his head and walked toward him. The kid was bleeding from his neck and collapsed."
The actor cradled the victim and called into the restaurant for towels, Gooding's rep confirms. After stemming the bleeding, he flagged down a passing police car and waited with the injured young man until an ambulance arrived.
The two police officers involved did not return the paper's calls for comment.
Gooding, 39, and wife Sara, 37, are parents to sons Spencer, 12, and Mason, 10, as well as daughter Piper, who turns 2 in October.
