Oprah Winfrey: I've got good white folks
Quote:
Oprah - I've Got "Good White Folks"
Posted May 15th 2007 8:30AM by TMZ Staff
Filed under: Let's Get This Party Started
Oprah Winfrey wishes her beloved grandma was still around -- to see the "good white folks" that are under her domain.
The media queen told a group of graduates at the Howard University commencement Saturday that her grandmother's wish was that Oprah would someday work for some "good white folks." How the tables have turned, said Oprah, now that those "good white folks" are working for her. Oprah's grandma worked as a servant in Mississippi in the 1950s, and the younger Winfrey has often invoked her as an inspiration and a guiding force in her life.

yeah, if a white person had said something about "good black people" she'd invite them to her show to tell them how racist they are - fucking hipocrite!

Oprah can say anything she wants, even if it's offensive. After all, she's Oprah. She doesn't give a toss whether it offends anyone and doesn't have to.
To be fair, I understand the context in which she's saying it, but I also understand it offends some people. Her grandma was alive at a time when a lot of white folks didn't treat black folks well at all in the South.

I understand the context also. But it doesn't make her any better than the white folks who were treating black folks repulsively. She now has only white "servants." So she now has become just the same as the white folks in that she has a superiority complex and wants to remind them that she is in charge and that she is better than them. Not an evolved person if you ask me. She takes pride in that and in my humble opinion that makes her narrow minded. That and believing it is okay for her to say and do what she pleases without taking into consideration other people. I'm telling you it is not healthy. I want people close to me to tell me I am wrong, it makes me a better person.

Fuck Oprah. Outside of America she's nothing special. I can't believe how she's allowed to get away with blatant racism like this, but she can call anyone else on whatever she likes, because she's Oprah.

I understand the context that Oprah was speaking in, but the way she said it makes her come off like an idiot. But, then again, what else is new? Oprah lives in her own little Oprah world, where everyone black, white, brown and yellow have to bow down before her so-called infinite wisdom.

I don't think she was being racist at all-I think she was simply stating her Grandmothers worldview in the 1950's would have never, ever dreamed of the opportunity she now has. It wasn't even possible then. She could never have had the briefest thought Oprah would ever have white people working for her instead of the other way around. I think she was just stating fact. What she says is true-my parents are Mississipians. Mother(white) agrees with her fully and also doesn't take it racially. Just plain ol'fact.Remember-they were not even allowed to use the same bathroom as white people-or water fountain back then.

I don't think Oprah was being racist either. My parents grew up in the South under Jim Crow segregation, so I know the context Oprah was speaking in. I think her grandmother was just saying hopefully she would work for some white people who would treat her fairly. But, as usual, Oprah's own pompous attitude comes shining through, and overshadows her grandmother's sentiments.
