Jessica Simpson gives mini-van to orphanage

The 26-year-old singer/actress surprised staff and kids at the Casa Hogar Elim orphanage in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico on Sunday (25Mar07) when she drove a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country through the gates of the home.

Simpson has enjoyed a long history with the orphanage - when she first visited the place seven years ago, she had to be talked out of adopting one of the children.

The Angels singer has been a regular visitor and contributor ever since.

Mama Lupita, who runs the struggling orphanage is the new owner of the mini-van.

A thrilled Simpson was overcome with emotion as the children thanked her for her generosity. She said, "I'm so honoured and happy to be able to help."

Simpson was joined in her mercy mission by mum Tina and manager/father Joe.

The singer won a Chrysler sports car at the Mtv Video Music Awards last year (06), but asked the bosses at the auto firm to exchange the vehicle for a mini-van, so she could donate it to the orphanage, after hearing that Mama Lupita's van had broken down.

Hasn't she done something similar before? This story seems kind of familiar, but the date suggests that it just happened.

Well yeah, she did get it for free, but it's still a very nice gesture. I'm sure Mama Lupita was happy to get it.

lol I'm sorry but she gave away a van she got for free so she wouldn't have to pay the huge taxes on it......its kind of obvious.....hate to be so cynical but thats the way it looks

So it would have been better if she had kept it for herself, or traded it in and bought herself yet another several thousand dollar handbag or designer outfit. Heaven forbid those kids or the woman who runs the orphange should benefit from her cheap, shallow and terribly selfish behavior. Jesus, people, give your heads a shake.

Well, what is an orphanage going to be doing with an SUV? Those things require lots of gas, and upkeep. It says she has an ongoing relationship with this orphanage; so it took winning a vehicle on a t.v. show to spur her into doing something "generous" by swapping it with something else and then giving it away? It sounds like she wanted this publicized too, to show everyone what a great person she is.

Sorry, that's the way I see it.

Transporting all kinds of things: food, supplies, kids. She had a van before so she was obviously able to find a use for it and figure out how to fill the tank. I mean, why wouldn't she need a donated SUV?

I don't know what Jessica's motives were, and I don't care. I care that the orphanage got something that it needed.

I'm with Pacific Breeze. Usually I'm the first to slam Jessica Simpson for being an idiot, but donating that van to the orphanage was a nice thing to do.

I think she was originally called out for winning the car, as in the media was insinuating how selfish and indulgent it would be for an already ridiculously wealthy celebrity to keep the sports car. So she kind of HAD to donate it once the media put the spotlight on her in order to keep "Greedy Jessica" headlines from hitting the news. They probably figured they could get free publicity out of this forced act of generosity.

I think this is the same thing that happened a few years back when J.Lo's mom won a huge jackpot gambling somewhere. The media caught wind of it and was all like, "You're not going to actually keep all that money being the mother of such an ostentatiously wealthy celebrity, ARE YOU????"

You know they must be PISSED when someone tells them they have to give away free stuff they won just for PR's sake!!
