Uma Thurman used to think she was ugly when she was at school.
The 'Kill Bill' star battled with body image issues as a schoolgirl and admits she had very few friends as a teenager.
Uma, 36, said: "I spent the first 14 years of my life convinced that my looks were hideous.
"There were none-stop changes of school and no friends. I hated sports lessons and all group activities."
It wasn't until Uma started acting that her confidence began to grow and she started to realise she was attractive.
She said: "I had a part in a school play and, because I was tall, I did some modelling. Based on that, I tried to launch a career. It was crazy. But the parts kept coming."
Uma, who is around 6ft tall, didn't have a boyfriend for most of her school years and only started properly dating when she got older.
The actress, who is widely considered to be one of Hollywood's most beautiful women, revealed: "When I was young, no boy ever liked me. For years, when people told me I was beautiful, I didn't believe a word of it. Now I think it's a great compliment - it's utterly delightful."

I can see this, she has odd features that somehow work now - but as a child I bet she was awkward looking, especially being so tall.
I love Uma, she was my first lesbian crush ever ... also the first to make my top 5 list (although she was bumped later).

I love her, but I still think she's ugly.

I agree with Cloud, she is one of those women that has a "unique" appearance. Not always gorgeous but not always ugly. In a way, it is good for her to speak out about her teen years. How many girls are out there looking up to models and actresses and feeling pretty crappy because they don't look like that? It doesn't help that you have the ones who say "I've always been this way" and so on. As dumb as it sounds, it made me feel tons better growing up to read that so and so had an ugly stage.

You know what? I'll stake a hat or two on the probability that she said this in an interview, answering questions that were put to her. And why shouldn't she? It's part of her job! I very much doubt that she issued some kind of statement saying that she was insecure as a child - why so sarcastic?

Did all celebrities have the exact same childhood? All this "ohhh I was such a loser in high school" bs.

Kids are cruel when someone looks different than whats considered 'normal'; i can imagine Uma was an awkward looking child.
Kids who were bullied at highschool probably have more drive and determination to become something.

Probably not, but the ones who answer the question with 'I've always felt good about myself, my body is exactly what I've always wanted, I always knew I was attractive'...they probably don't get quoted as often. After all, who has that life?
I'd assume the statement about feeling insecure and unnatractive when younger could be applied to the majority of the population, so its not surprising that such a large number of celebrities would have felt this way too.

I think a lot of people who were insecure as teenagers get into acting. I know that I did drama as a way to be outspoken but as a character. When you're on stage, or on film, you arent you, you're someone else. and that in itself is a very comforting thing. I also know that many teenagers get urged into thoes kind of activities to come out of their shell. I loved drama and I had a shit time at school. *shrug*.
Oh and as a side note: Uma is an absolute goddess.

^Thats very true. Kim Basinger siad that she became an actress because she never really knew who she was, or wasn't comfortable being herself, and acting allowed her to play different characters, and not be herself. That makes sense to me. Although its not necessarily a good thing either to not be comfortable with who you are.

I acted as a child and was completely shy at school and felt horribly ugly. I would step into an audition and come to life and nail it...it's absolutely a way of stepping out of your comfort zone but still being slightly guarded.
I LOVE Uma. I love how atypical her face is. She's MY girl crush.
