Dame Helen Mirren has been crowned the Bafta queen after she was named Best Actress and her movie took the Best Film prize at Britain's equivalent of the Oscars.
The 61-year-old star was favourite to win after picking up several awards, including a Golden Globe, for her role as Elizabeth II in The Queen.
The film, which is about the Royal Family in the aftermath of Princess Diana's death, beat Babel, The Departed, The Last King of Scotland and Little Miss Sunshine to Best Film.
Dame Helen's film was nominated for 10 gongs, while the latest James Bond movie Casino Royale had nine at the Royal Opera House in central London.
However, there was no joy for 007 star Daniel Craig, who had hoped to become the first Bond to win a Bafta.
He lost out in the Best Actor category to US star Forest Whitaker for his powerful role as the brutal Ugandan leader Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.
The film, based on the book by Giles Foden and shot in Uganda, won a total of three gongs, including Outstanding British Film of the Year and Adapted Screenplay.
Casino Royale, the 21st movie in the Bond franchise, only landed one prize, for Best Sound.
But there was some good news for Bond - French beauty Eva Green, 26, who played Vesper Lynd, won the Orange Rising Star award.
British director Paul Greengrass, 51, took the Best Director title for United 93, a documentary-style retelling of the hijacking and passenger revolt on one of the September 11 planes.
Best Supporting Actor was won by American star Alan Arkin, 72, for his role as a heroin-addicted grandfather in black comedy Little Miss Sunshine.
Jennifer Hudson, 25, the American Idol finalist, was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dreamgirls, the musical film starring Beyonce which is loosely based on the story of The Supremes.

Another award for Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce is gonna be Pi**ed!. Her award cabinet must be full because she as already won 23 awards for her role in Dreamgirls. I can't say that i am a fan because i havent watch Dreamgirls yet, but its always nice to see someone ego being brought down a few notches in this case Beyonce's.
