Default Catherine Zeta Jones finds skinny mums scary

herine Zeta-Jones has branded some actresses 'insane' for rushing to shed post-pregnancy weight so they can meet Hollywood's demand for stick-thin leading ladies.
The curvaceous mother-of-two said she finds 'super skinny' women scary.

Miss Zeta-Jones - who has two young children with Michael Douglas - contrasted her own steady return to her normal figure with the trend of some celebrities to 'compete' to get back to their usual weight as soon as possible.

The 36-year-old star, who danced in the West End before first finding fame in ITV's The Darling Buds of May, said: "My muscles have memory from the time I danced and it's quick for me to get back into shape, but I'm not fanatical."

"I grew up with dancers - anorexia and other eating disorders were common - so I learned how to deal with diets without losing my limit.

"I think it's awful, this competition between actresses who just had a baby to see who's first to get back to their normal weight. It's insane. I find this wave of super-skinny women scary."

Her comments, at a party in Brazil for her latest film The Legend of Zorro, are sure to ruffle the feathers of fellow Hollywood stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Demi Moore and Madonna. All made rapid returns to their slender physiques just a few months after having children.

'It's awful'

Miss Paltrow, who is rumoured to be pregnant with her second child, quickly returned to her svelte silhouette after the birth of her daughter Apple in May last year.

Her slimdown was credited to the intensive programme of 'baby yoga' she undertook in London while pregnant.

Yesterday, she was unveiled as the new face of Estee Lauder - replacing Liz Hurley - and kept any hint of a bump covered up in a ruffled shirt and belted coat.

Demi Moore was famously pictured in the full bloom of pregnancy on the cover of Vanity Fair back in 1991.

But while she had seemed proud of her bump, she was less keen on the idea of any extra curves after giving birth - and she was soon pictured on a beach in Malibu looking slimmer than ever.

This year, Julia Roberts made light work of regaining her figure after having her twins, Phinneaus and Hazel, the previous November.

Former Brookside actress Anna Friel has started filming nude scenes from her new film Irish Jam just three months after having her daughter Gracie in July.

She admitted she had followed a strict calorie-controlled diet during pregnancy.

But she pales in comparison with Victoria Beckham, whose ability to reappear as skinny as ever just weeks after having each of her three children has astonished observers.

Gabby Logan, who presents ITV's live football coverage, had a huge bump before giving birth to twins in July this year, but exercised regularly throughout her pregnancy and wasted no time getting back to the gym to quickly regain her figure.

Although Miss Zeta- Jones is not keen on dieting herself, she has banned her son Dylan, five, and daughter Carys, two, from developing a sweet tooth.

"I don't give my kids sweets," she said. "And almost no juice. When they have juice it's like they are having their first taste of champagne."

yeah...but it's ok to have plastic surgery (nose job, boobie implants) in response to the same kind of pressure that makes hollywood moms want to be thin? you make no sense, czj. no sense, i say!

Fruit juice has a ton of sugar. It's really not that good for you. I just read an article recently about how they believe that fruit juice is one of the larger contributors to childhood obesity in the US, because kids drink tons of it.

i think that's BS. i''m sorry, but all the fat kids i see ain't just drinkin juice, it's more like drinking soda, eating sugary crap, and spending 4 hours in front of the game cube every day. there's worse things for a kid than juice. hohos, for example.

i do dilute juice when i give it to my kids, though. but i can't tell you how many times i've seen moms give their kids a big gulp of mountain dew, etc, when i'm in the grocery store. i feel bad for those kids. my hubby works in special ed and sees the kids who literally were malnourished because their moms fed them nothing but pop and convenience foods when they were toddlers.

Thanks to fast food and all the processed crap being sold as 'food', North America has become a nation of overweight people who are actually starving themselves - malnutrition in another form. I am truly shocked by the junk that is being fed to children in this day and age. And I don't know what's worse - parents who really don't know any better, or parents who do and just don't care.

Hmmm ... I think I saw this on Maury ... oy.

^^^ i know, it's true. a lot of this is just ignorance. the saddest story is from someone i know: her husband was abusive and would not let her go to the store to buy baby food or formula for her son. she had to grind up canned fruit and add water to it and feed it to him in a bottle. now the boy is five and is missing almost all of his teeth (had to be pulled because they rotted as they came in). also he is about the size of a 3 year old, very thin and short. malnutrition is child abuse. thank god they are divorced now.

You know, I'm not a mom, so I don't have to worry about these things, but just a quick google search brings me dozens of pages that recommend limiting juice intake for kids due to high amounts of sugar. So why is it bad that Catherine doesn't let her kids have juice?

ETA: from an article on cnn.com:
Quote:
Children often prefer fruit juice to water or fresh fruit because juice tastes better to them. And many parents see no problem with allowing their children to drink almost unlimited amounts juice, since juice is promoted as a good source of nutrition.

Although juice does contain some healthy nutrients, it's high in calories and it may contribute to weight gain and tooth decay if consumed in excess. Some juice drinks, even those with 100 percent juice, have more calories than sugary carbonated beverages do. Juice also lacks the healthy fiber that whole fruit has.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children drink no more than two 6-ounce servings of fruit juice a day. Consider juices fortified with calcium, especially if your child shies away from milk and dairy products.

Muchlove, I totally agree with you about the juice as do most pediatricians. As much as I hate to agree with CZJ, I guess I have to admit she makes some good points.

Will someone again please tell me how this woman expects us to believe she's in her 30s though?

(This isn't aimed at you, Bellatheball, just everyone in general that thinks she's older than she says)

If you really think she's in her 40's, then that means she was in her 30's when she was on The Darling Buds of May. There's NO WAY she was in her 30's back then.

Really? I never saw that but I still have such a hard time believing that she's only a few years older than me. I'd have put her in her mid to late 40s. Maybe it's all that rubbing wrinkles with Michael that's doing it?

I think she looks 36, but everyone disagrees with me, so I must be blind. She only has a few fine wrinkles around her eyes. Am I missing something?

It IS NOT bullshit! Fruit juice has TONS of sugar!!! Just like those sugary sodas you see the "fat kids" drinking! Read a nutrition label next time and you'll see it's true...

I think she looks 36, but she's been looking 36 for at least 5 years, lol! Kudos to CZJ for caring about her kids' health!

**Did she really smoke throughout her pregnancies?? What a laugh! But, I guess we all have our hypocrisies, right?
