MTV's 'TRL' starring Vanessa Minnillo may be axed
Quote:
Nick Lachey may have to step it up on the bread-winning front: Vanessa Minnillo's veejay job may be on its way out.
An insider says MTV could soon bring the ax down on its signature countdown show because nobody watches it.
“The ratings are at an all-time low, around 300,000 viewers,” says the source. “The show is going to be canceled and rebranded."
(In other words, MTV has created a generation of viewers who don’t have the attention span to watch a music video.)
Recent data from Nielsen media peg TRL’s viewership at 393,000, down from almost 600,000 in 2001.
The rotating cast of veejays who present the live show, which launched in 1998, includes Nick Lachey’s galpal Vanessa Minnillo, Damien Fahey and Susie Castillo. Last Thursday, under-performing MTV president Michael Wolf abruptly left his job, although he said the decision to do so was his.
An MTV rep did not comment.

Ha ha ha, I am enjoying this. I find she's so arrogant and thinks she's the best thing that happened to this show: News flash!! Honey, you ain't!!!!
Could the producers think it's the HOST that's causing the lack of an attention span?!?!

The truly sad part of this is that TRL is the ONLY time MTV actually plays music videos.

You're right. It is after all called Music Television. There certainly is enough music to play all day everyday.

I watched TRL when I was about 13, but I stopped watching when I realized that they don't even show the full music videos, and I could watch them in their entirety online- commercial free and without comments such as "OMG THIS VIDEO IS SO FREAKIN HOT!!!! -CRYSTAL, MIAMI" popping up every 5 seconds. They show a clip from each of the top 10 and devote the rest of the time to letting their VJs ham for the cameras as if they were legitimate celebrities. I really think that what's caused the demise of this show is the fact that the VJs, like Vanessa Minnillo, forget that people are tuning in to watch the videos.... not them. When they start cutting back on the videos to let the show focus on D-list "celebrities" that no one cares about, people lose interest.

I remember when TRL first started as Total Request and it was on at like 8:00 at night but then it got so popular they moved it to the day and made it live. It was only ever a really big show when the boybands were around (I know because I watched JUST to see Hanson and it was ALWAYS a dual between them and BSB for the top spot until NSync because the shit). Basically when Carson became too cool to host it and the boybands slowly disappeared it became a shit show.
I'm glad MTV has finally come to realize this.

I just wish they would go back to the old format and play videos all day instead of every reality show known to man.

I remember the pre-TRL, which was called MTV Live. I liked it, and I especially liked the British host. A few months after it premiered, it became TRL and went down the toilet.

Mtv shows videos in the morning, and that's it. When you're getting ready for work...they don't even show videos late at night, and unfortunately, Mtv2 is becoming a similar situation. those damn Wild boys, reality shows, pimp my ride, this and that...
I just go on Aol on demand and watch the videos I like...

I remember when MTV first premiered! Man, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Spent many an hour in front of the tv.
Even Fuse, which was supposed to be the anti-MTV, has begun replacing music videos with stupid shows.

I used to love MTV, I've always been amazed how horrible the station's become! TRL was cool at first when they had musical guests singing full songs and interviews. But the WHOOO! - Sue from L.A. thing is truly obnoxious!
