Default Alan Cumming gets married

'X2's' Nightcrawler weds boyfriend

Wedding guests included a knight and a Spice Girl

By Zap2It.com

Alan Cumming, who played the blue-skinned mutant Nightcrawler in the "X-Men" sequel, is not longer feeling so blue.

The 41-year-old actor married his boyfriend, commercial illustrator Grant Shaffer, in a civil ceremony outside London on Sunday, Jan. 7, reports People.

"Not only are we so happy to be able to celebrate our love for each other, but also to be able to do it in a country that properly recognizes the rights of same-sex couples," Cumming says in a statement. "As residents of America we would have loved to marry there, but we hope that soon the civil rights that we have been afforded in the U.K. will be available to all gay Americans, and we look forward to celebrating not only our marriage, but the end of prejudice."

The couple live in New York City and have been together for two years.
The wedding ceremony was held at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, just down the Thames from London. Guest included actor Sir Ian McKellen, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, actress Neve Campbell, Rufus Wainwright and Monica Lewinsky.

The Scottish actor wore a custom-made oatmeal colored linen kilt suit while his partner wore a black-striped suit. Some highlights of the day include a string quartet playing the theme song to Cumming's 1995 film "Circle of Friends" as the pair walked down the aisle, Queen's "You're My Best Friend" playing at the end of the ceremony ad the newlyweds' nontraditional first skate on a rented ice rink.

Cumming, who in the past identified himself as bisexual, was once married to actress Hilary Lyon from 1985 to 1993.

Cumming has won a Tony for playing the emcee in the 1998 revival of "Cabaret" and last year starred in Broadway's "The Threepenny Opera." On the big screen, he portrayed Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, a mutant with the power of teleportation in "X2: X-Men United." His other film credits include "GoldenEye," "Emma," "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," "Spice World," "Titus," "Josie and the Pussycats" and the "Spy Kids" movies.

He has also had a recurring role on the Showtime series "The L Word."

You know it's really weird - and the result of a lifetime of programming no doubt - that when I see [random gay celeb] 'gets married' in a headline I automatically think "Hang on, I thought he/she was gay". My bad.
