Sean “Diddy” Combs in trouble with Humane Society for use of dog fur
By: Josephine Cruz
POSTED: 13:32 EST, December 22, 2006
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released the results of mass spectrometry tests conducted on a range of fur-trimmed jackets today (Dec. 22), which revealed that a Sean John snorkel advertised on Macys.com as having an "imitation rabbit fur collar" and "faux fur" is actually made of fur from canines.
The jacket, part of Sean “Diddy” Combs clothing line, was labeled as containing “raccoon” fur, but has now been found to be fur from a canine species known as “raccoon dog.” Macy’s informed The HSUS that the company has pulled the mislabeled Sean John garments from its department stores and online shop. The group is urging all retailers to follow their lead.
“First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “This is an industry-wide problem, and our investigation demonstrates that retailers and designers aren’t paying close enough attention to composition of the fur trim they are selling. It’s especially problematic when the fur is sourced from China where domestic dogs and cats and raccoon dogs are killed in gruesome ways, even skinned alive. The safest course of action is for Sean Combs and other designers and retailers to stop using fur trim. That single act would solve the problems we have uncovered.”
The news comes on the heels of other mass spectrometry tests conducted by The HSUS on a range of fur-trimmed jackets from retailers such as Burlington Coat Factory, Bloomingdale’s, J.C. Penney, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue, and from designers and clothing lines such as Baby Phat, Andrew Marc, MaxMara, and Calvin Klein, revealing that most of the jackets labeled as “raccoon” or “coyote” from China in fact contain fur from raccoon dogs. Of the ten garments tested by The HSUS, nine tested positive as raccoon dog fur, meaning they were mislabeled, a violation of federal law.
The Fur Products Labeling Act prohibits the advertising or sale of any fur product that is falsely or misleadingly labeled, and authorizes the Federal Trade Commission to seek criminal penalties, impose fines of up to $5,000 per violation and to seize mislabeled products.
The HSUS is also calling on Congress to amend the Dog and Cat Protection Act – which bans the sale of dog or cat fur in the United States – to include raccoon dog, since the animals are so inhumanely killed and the species is similar to domesticated dogs.
Raccoon dogs are indigenous to Asia, including eastern Siberia and Japan, and are sometimes called Asiatic raccoons, Finn raccoons, or tanuki. “It would be jarring to the public to shop in a marketplace where dog and cat fur is banned, but coats labeled as ‘raccoon dog’ are still legally sold,” added Pacelle.

i've also been told that the little furry mice cats love so much (which are made in China) are made from real cat fur. All fur disgusts me unless it's attached to the animal that was born with it. I hate China.

Raccoon-dog - NYCTEREUCTES PROCYONOIDES
Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Meat-eating Mammals (Carnivora)
Family: Canidae.
The Name "Dog": "Dog" comes from from the Old English word "daga." Although the resemblance to a raccoon is startling, it is not closely related to a raccoon. As you can see by its family name "Canidae," Latin for "dog," this animal is definitely a dog.

Ugh. I can't believe that it's cheaper to buy real fur than use faux. But on second thought, I guess it would be expensive to manufacture real-feeling fur.

These celebs are stupid. His shit is tacky-ass crap anyway.
Last year, Coach started selling purses lined with Coyote fur!! The "coyote" fur is imported from China and the Humane Society has a strong suspicion that the fur is actually from domestic dogs and not wild ones. Coach, by the way, still carries the product!

Also, those little cute fur cats you see sometimes in store windows, are real cat fur. This makes me crazy. One of my friends is from Hong Kong, her family has Chow dogs, and they are members of the family. Their pictures are up on the mantel with the kids pictures. She has distant relatives that raise and eat dogs in China, her family hates and fears them, it is terrible what they do to these dogs.

Sadly this has been going on for a long time. How they are killed is even more disturbing. I myself have seen clothing in cheapo stores that was labeled faux fur but felt exactly like domestic animal fur and even had the little crinkles down by the roots like real animal fur has. It disgusted me to even think what it might have been. Thats why no one, should EVER buy fur, labeled faux or real, unless they are a heartless human being. Not only that, it shouldn't matter what kind of animal was used. Its still a living breathing thing that was tortured and harvested for some stupid ugly piece of crap. It doesn't make it any better whether it was raccoon, dog, coyote, rat, whatever.

I don't know if it is true that animal fur is cheaper than faux fur. It's the only reason I could fathom as to why manufacturers are labeling this fur as faux--that's it cheaper to use it than it is to use faux fur.

I totally agree.
I find it suspect that "Diddy" didn't know what was being used to make the jackets.

Diddy Apologises Over Fur Blunder
Dec 27, 2006 - World Entertainment News Network
Rap mogul Sean ' Diddy' Combs has issued an apology to animal rights activists over the use of real fur in his Sean John clothing range - insisting he didn't realise it was genuine animal skin.
The star came under fire from the Humane Society Of The United States (hsus) earlier this month after it was discovered the hood lining of a 'faux fur' Sean John jacket was made from the skin of raccoon dogs.
But Combs has apologised to Hsus and has vowed never to use real fur again, insisting department store Macy's remove the offending garment from sale.
He says, "I was unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and website."
"I have instructed our licensee to cease the production of any garment using this material immediately."

How about just not using all fur all-together? Including fake. Besides the ethical issues t's tacky looking, especially when you dont take care of your clothes and it gets matted and grey - really nice looking
