Teen actress HILARY DUFF is amazed she is still dating GOOD CHARLOTTE rocker JOEL MADDEN - because she only gave him her telephone number out of politeness when they first met.

The 18-year-old star, who has been dating Madden, 26, for 18 months, even snubbed his phone call that evening, because she had no intention of having a relationship with someone nearly nine years her senior.

She says, "We met through a mutual friend - Joel put me on the spot in front of a load of people and I couldn't say no because I didn't want to seem rude.

"He called me that night but I didn't pick up.

"When he called a few days later we talked for about an hour, which was odd seeing as I didn't know him!

"I thought he was attractive after seeing him in magazines. I had no idea he liked me."
