Thumbs up Alan Cumming receives honorary doctorate

25 November 2006
CALL ME DOC HOLLYWOOD
Honorary degree for actor
By James Moncur

HOLLYWOOD actor Alan Cumming celebrated becoming a "doctor" yesterday.
The X-Men star was given an honorary doctorate of arts for his stage and screen work and his campaigning for HIV/AIDS awareness.

His 68-year-old mum Mary and nephew Gary, 17, looked on with pride as the star was honoured at the University of Abertay in Dundee.

Cumming, 41, from Carnoustie, Angus, joked after the ceremony that he would have to change his passport to reflect his new title.

The actor, who is starring in hit West End show Bent, said: "My mum's dead chuffed because she can now tell all her pals her son is a doctor."

Cumming has appeared in Goldeneye, Eyes Wide Shut and X-Men 2. He received a Tony award for his performance in Cabaret on Broadway.

Broadcaster Muriel Gray was given a doctorate of letters in recognition of her 20-year career.

The 47-year-old, who is also a best-selling author, co-presented Channel 4's cult 1980s music show The Tube and later founded her own production company, Ideal World Productions.

Mum-of-three Muriel revealed she was suffering from a severe bout of flu and added: "This award is very important and I managed to drag myself off my death-bed to be here.

"It's a great honour and I'm delighted to receive it."

I'm not impressed. A doctorate only means something if you actually work for it ... jmo.

I love Alan but this is like giving a doctorate to Rachel Ray for inventing the charming term 'EVOO' and having both a cooking show and a talk show. hoo-freaking-ray.

I absolutely HATE it when she says evoo, always followed immediately by " that's extra-virgin olive oil." Use either one or the other, you dumb twit, NOT BOTH. We know what it means!!!!!!
