Spielberg Blasts "Irresponsible" TV Industry

Steven Spielberg has blasted today's television industry for exposing children to gruesome shows. The Saving Private Ryan director spoke out at the International Emmy's directors meeting in New York on Monday, warning producers to act more responsibly. He singled out graphic trailers which showed "blood and people being dissected" such as for forensic drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Spielberg said, "I'm a parent who is very concerned. Today we need to be as responsible as we can possibly be, not just thinking of our own children but our friends' and neighbors' children. We certainly need to be responsible and careful about what we put into that box, because what comes out the other end truly has changed the world and will continue to change the world, for better or worse."

I can somewhat see his point, but unfortunately, nothing he says is going to get through to people. We're too jaded nowadays, and shows like CSI are probably nothing compared to some of the crap that's on television. The only way to get around your kids not seeing it is setting parental controls and watching your kid. Simple.

I guess this is why he airbrushed out the shotguns in E.T and replaced them with walki-talkies.

I swear, when people have kids or get old they turn into fucking sad sacks.

Why would a kid want to watch shows like CSI.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I honestly don't believe that children turn into demons just from watching television. It's the parents who make all the difference. I grew up in a very liberal home where my parents didn't censor what I watched on t.v., but they were always there to explain the program and answer any questions I had. It's not the television industry's job to do the parenting for you. I can't stand finger-pointing!

^ You definitely have a point b/c I grew up in the same household; I was watching R rated movies when I was like, 7. I think the only thing they would not allow us to see were graphic sex scenes. I never had a problem growing up though; quite honestly out of all my friends I'm the one who turned out the best. I'm not promiscuous, I'm very independent, open minded, and I also have no interest in drugs — unlike all my peers.

So I don't think watching "bad" things at a young age damages a child; it's definitely the parents responsibility to teach them right from wrong, which my parents did.

I have an 11 year old daughter who wants to study forensic science. She's fascinated by it. She's also a night owl so she sits up with her dad and watches NCIS because she likes watching them work in the labs etc.

I let my children watch most anything except shows that would make them more stupid after watching. Shows like Dukes of Hazzard and Love Boat. I wasn't too worried about them watching sex, I was more worried about the violence. After all I wanted them to grow up and have sex, but I didn't want them to grow up and be violent.

Well i was thinking more like 7 and 8 year olds. My nephew is 7 and refuses to sit and watch anything other than cartoons. I know all kids have different interests and attention spans, but I was just writing from experience.

In my opinion kids are so desensitized to violence now; if they aren't watching specific crime shows or cop shows or whatever has plenty of violence, they can play video games that are just as bad, and even the 6 o'clock news is more graphic now than ever. I dont think its something you can really protect kids from anymore.

I don't think CSI is all that violent, the focus of the show is solving crime, not violence JMO. Some scenes are graphic but I don't think violence is the theme of the show, if that's the only thing some people are getting out of then that's too bad...maybe they need director's commentary or something

Wow, that's awesome! I wanted to be a forensic scientist when I was young but unfortunately I wasn't able to fulfill my dream job. I hope she makes it all the way! I'm still deeply interested in it.

I think that the problem with children seeing too much gore, dead bodies and blood makes them, i dont know, 'get used to it'. And once they're used to it, they could possibly carry out a real killing in the future. I watch my brothers play violent video games all the time, blowing people's heads off is both normal and amusing to them. I know its different to killing a real person, but is it...? I think people are definately influenced by what they see.

^^ It's been proven that the levels of violence in kids has increased nowadays because of the tv.
And ITA with you on the "too much gore, violence"...
Just go to Cartoon Network or whatever kids' channel--loads of killing and violence and gore..It does make them absorb violence as something normal.
