Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made their first public appearance with their infant daughter Suri last night as they went for dinner with the Mayor of Rome.

In a cloak and dagger operation the couple swept out of the Hassler Hotel in Rome in two minibuses accompanied by baby Suri and family for the intimate dinner date.

Using bus and taxi lanes the two mini buses with blacked out windows swept through Rome's traffic clogged straight to the Piazza Venezia where mayor Walter Veltroni was waiting.

First out of the minibus were the children Cruise adopted with his former wife Nicole Kidman - Isabella, 13, and 11 year-old Conor - as well as his sister and family of his bride-to-be who were ushered inside the historic Campidoglio building by staff.

As photographers gathered around the second mini bus carrying Tom and Katie a security guard asked them to step back as the flash from their cameras would startle baby Suri.

After five minutes Tom and Katie stepped out of the van and the actor put a reassuring arm around his bride to be as she clutched their baby closely and they made their way up the steps to the dinner date.

Both smiled broadly and Tom even managed a wave before they dashed upstairs for their meal in a function room with dramatic views over the Roman Forum.

Wow actual pictures of Suri. I don't know what to say as I am so use to not seeing her. She is big but then I have no idea what size babies should be. So I will pick on Tom he looks terrible and his tie is croaked.

Tom looks like Hell... what happened to his hair, body, etc.. Those side profile shots really show his beaker.

Katie looks VERY uncomfortable holding the baby and Suri is super big for that age, my best friends daughter was born within a week of Suri and she is not nearly that big.
