British actress Rachel Weisz lashes out at pregnancy-alcohol critics
WEISZ LASHES OUT AT PREGNANCY-ALCOHOL CRITICS
LATEST: BRITISH actress RACHEL WEISZ has hit back at critics who slammed her for saying that it was OK to drink alcohol while pregnant. The Oscar-winner gave birth to her first child with director DARREN ARONOFSKY earlier this year (06).
Although she didn’t reveal if she herself drank while she was expecting her son HENRY CHANCE, she said European women regularly drink when they are expecting. Weisz’s representative confirms that her client made the comments saying, "She was speaking only about herself and what her doctor said was okay for her.
"She wasn’t speaking as an expert. She believes everyone should consult their own physician to see what is right for them." The star has been criticised by medical experts who described her comments as "ill-informed" and "dangerous." In the US and Canada, complete abstinence from drinking is advised for expectant mothers due to the risk of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. However, UK guidelines allow pregnant women one or two small glasses of wine or single measures of a spirit once or twice a week.

It also avoids the far more dangerous risk of medical professionals being sued to Hell and back by people who need to blame someone when shit happens.

Seriously though, DO the Europeans actually drink typically during pregnancy? I have always heard that too and figured it was probably not true.
The day I found I was pregnant with my first child, I turned on the TV and was watching an old episode of 'Bewitched'--and Samantha finds out SHE is pregnant too. And they celebrated by having a martini....so I feel like the older generation wasn't as aware perhaps??

Yeah it's common to have a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy. My auntie was encouraged by her doctor to have a pint of Guiness everyday as it's so high in iron. Booze consumed in small amounts is not frowned upon over here at all - and we all seem to manage to keep the birth count high with healthy babies.

After the first trimester, one glass of wine occasionally will not harm the baby. In fact, when I was in early labor, going through lots of contractions that never took on a pattern....My ob/gyn told me to drink wine. Oh, and he went to Harvard & Brown and was a really wonderful, attentive doctor.

I really don't see anything wrong with what she said. It is ok for you to have a small amount. That's one of the reasons why I love Europeans so much and really dislike Americans (and I am American). Europeans are far more laid back than Americans and it's just a much better life-style, in my opinion. We're way too uptight about the silliest bullshit.

Yeah, most Europeans will 'risk' the occasional glass of wine during pregnancy. I know the rest of the world thinks Europeans are smelly, unwashed, ignorant savages (they don't even speak English can you believe!?) but overall I don't think the incidence of FAS or other alcolol-related infant abnormalities is any greater than elsewhere in the world.
