TV producer: Irwin just a showman
    POSTED: 1830 GMT (0230 HKT), November 1, 2006

    LONDON, England

(CNN) -- A BBC documentaries producer has branded the late crocodile
hunter Steve Irwin a "showman" more interested in his own stardom than
the animal kingdom, British media reports say.

"Planet Earth" producer Alastair Fothergill launched an attack on the
Australian TV star in the British magazine, Radio Times. Irwin was killed
by a stingray while making a wildlife program in September.

"What Steve Irwin did for a living was as different from what we do as it's
possible to get," Fothergill said, according to the UK's Press Association.

"Let's face it, Steve was a showman. Yes, he introduced a lot of people
to natural history, but his basic stock in trade was, 'Aren't I brave, and
aren't animals dangerous?' The fact is, I'm not interested in human stars.
I'm only interested in animal stars."

Fothergill went on, according to PA: "The first thing we tell our crews is
that if they're in danger, then they're not doing their job.

"The first rule of natural history film-making is that you're there to film
the animals' natural behavior -- and attacking humans isn't natural behavior.

"If they're doing that, it means you've intruded on their world and made
    them feel threatened."

His comments emerged the day after Irwin's widow Terri fought back
tears on stage at the National Television Awards.

She presented a lifetime achievement award to nature documentaries
star David Attenborough and said he had been her husband's inspiration.

"Of course, as a television wildlife presenter, Steve was larger than life,
but his real, true love was conservation," Terri said.

Backstage Attenborough paid tribute to Irwin for introducing millions of
    people to natural history.

It is the second time in a week the late "Crocodile Hunter" has been
    the center of controversy.

Last week the comedy "South Park" lampooned the Australian wildlife
star -- or, depending on how you took the episode, people's sensitivities
about death and particularly celebrity death.

An episode showed Satan preparing to host a Halloween fancy dress party.
Other guests include Princess Diana, Hitler and rapper Notorious B.I.G. (Full story)

Critics said the were appalled by the Irwin character's depiction in a
bloodstained shirt and with a stingray still attached to his chest.
    (I-Report: What do you think?)

John Beyer of UK TV watchdog Mediawatch said: "This is such bad taste
and the makers of 'South Park' should review their decision to show it.
    Steve's family are still grieving.

"To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after
    the event is grossly insensitive.''

"South Park" maker Comedy Central defended the episode. A spokesperson
for the company said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will
again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."
I love that more people come out of the woodwork with their real opinions
instead of sucking up. To be honest, I never knew Irwin was supposedly a
conservationalist (sp) until it was said repetitively after his death.

As far as the Halloween costumes, people need to lighten up. This is the price of fame.

I don't care what shortcomings and vanities he had when he was alive, his family are still in an acute stage of greiving, I don't understand why that is so hard to respect. People are just so freaking impatient and it's not like his shortcomings were so different from a lot of people - particularly those who are now using his death as publicity for their own tv shows or for themselves to make random quotes to the media. So people are putting him on a pedestal that he doesn't deserve because he died prematurely - I'm sure him and his family would rather he could have stuck around without any of that so he could be a father to his two small children.

I love how people talk shit about others when that person is no longer around to defend themselves.

This guy couldn't say this during the last ten years of Steve Irwin's career of "harrassing animals"...? God forbid, Steve Irwin might have heard and came to his own defense.

Yeah, some father he was. Holding his baby while he fed an 10 foot crocodile from his hands.

Brilliant fathering, but inline with how he lived (and stupidly died)

Like I said before, chances are the kid would have been trampled to death, eaten or carried off by one of the animals Ol Stevie pissed off daily.

Maybe this guy was saying it but no one was listening because it wasn't news before Irwin's death.

I think we should merge all the Steve Irwin bashing threads into a sub section.

As I have mentioned before, I don't have a problem with him. He made a lot of people genuinely happy (espectially kids) and that means a lot more to me than some of the other miserable sods you see prancing around caring only about their next stupid fix of botox etc.

I dont see why people feel the need to come out of the woodwork now to declare how they felt about Steve Irwins tactics. I guess it takes a coward to attack a dead person. I fully understand people have strong opinions for or against the way Steve Irwin worked but can't they hold their tongues and be a bit respectful out of consideration for his family. It's his family that are paying the price for the kind of work that Steve chose to do.
