Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are ruining the lives of American journalists

A blurb on Romensko pointed to an article in the Columbia Journalism Review Daily, which pointed to Richard Coen's article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. Yeah, it took us a day to find it, but come on — we're surprised we even found it at all buried in that sea of blogging.

And from that column is a quote that sparked a perspective that fits ever so snugly into our Bermuda Triangle of celebrity, media, and New York.

"... and Time Inc., which reportedly paid about $4 million for pictures of Brangelina's baby, recently let go two of the best investigative reporters in the business, Donald Barlett and James Steele. The company said it could no longer afford them."

CJR responds:

Obviously, we don't have access to the Time Inc. payroll. But we're guessing that the $4 million-plus that the company spent for the pictures of a baby (who, by the way, looks like every baby that you ever saw) would pay for about 10 more years of salary and expenses for Barlett and Steele and their research help.

All this "charity" you think Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are taking part in by selling that little thing to the big boys over at Time Inc? It's actually putting quality journalists out of work, and keeping our wages down here in the States. So the next time your dad asks you why you only make $25K a year as an EA when your college tuition cost about six times that ... just tell them that because of Brangelina, your salary went to kids in Africa.

(Oh, and of course, don't forget to blame those totally overpaid bloggers and Al Gore for inventing the Internet, too.)

Ok.. this article is a bit random to read, but if I understand it correctly, it's stating that B&A are responsible for others losing their jobs at TIME? I don't think so. Let's try blaming the news organizations that pay RIDICULOUS amounts of money for celebrity photos. That's the true problem here folks.
