Pathetic sales and unreasonable Diva demands sink Mariah Carey concert
Quote:
HONG KONG (AP) -- Mariah Carey's weekend concert was canceled Thursday because of poor ticket sales and what promoters said were the pop star's "unreasonable demands."
Carey was to perform Saturday at an outdoor space near Hong Kong's Central financial district. Promoter Concerts Asia said it had only sold 4,000 tickets, despite a "substantial" advertising campaign.
"We have decided to cancel the event effective immediately due to both the poor response of public ticket sales and also due to specific last-minute demands which we find wholly unreasonable and not with the best interests of Hong Kong, us and also the fans," said a statement posted Thursday on the promoter's Web site.
Concerts Asia declined further comment, and contact information for Carey wasn't immediately available.
Hits by the 36-year-old Grammy-winning singer include "We Belong Together."

I hate to admit this but I like some of her music. Makes me want to dance and sing along. As a person - she leaves much to be desired based on the press I see about her.

My hubby works as a CPA in the Finance Dept of a large Casino, and this Casino gets a lot of big acts to come and perform. The Casino typically loses money actually paying the act, but makes up for it in the show patrons gambling, eating their restaurants, staying in their hotels, etc. Well, Ms. Carey was booked recently. And the casino lost BIG TIME. Reason: all her f-ing demands. Hubby said they would never ever again put up w/that shit. NEVER. And I don't think she even sold out this venue....

^^Honestly, I have begged him to tell me but he WON'T!!! He's a super tight lipped guy about anything 'work related' because it's not really something that they (the Casino) wants advertised. I can tell you that, according to his friend who runs the shows, that she was by far the worst behaved, requested the most outlandish items and had the staff RUNNING, well before her arrival. They had to add extra people, just to accomodate her requests. Unfortunately, that's all I could get out of him.....and that they lost a lot of money.

Here's an article about her from July.

Mariah takes diva demands to new heights

Mariah Carey demanded antiseptic hand wipes during a radio interview after being touched by fans outside the London studio. The curvy singer - who is renowned for her diva requests - stunned Capital FM DJ Johnny Vaughan when she interrupted his show to clean the "germs" from her hands.
Shocked Johnny asked: "What have you got there? Is it a demand?"
Mariah explained: "This is a demand. It is just really essential because I could get germs, because I've touched a lot of fans outside."
The sexy singer, who performed at the Live 8 show has earned herself a reputation as a demanding diva over the years. Earlier this year, Mariah left organisers of an awards ceremony fuming after turning up 90 minutes late because she broke a fingernail.
According to reports, the pop beauty threw a tantrum after snapping the nail and ordered her entourage to fix the problem before she would attend the Capital Radio Awards in London.
Despite being accompanied by a team stylists, make-up artists and
hairdressers on her trip Carey was unable to locate a manicurist.
Eventually staff managed to find a nail specialist to come to the lavish Bagloni hotel, where she was staying, to repair the damage and get Mariah to the ceremony, where she caused more outrage by arriving with 11 bodyguards and demanded they watch over her as she ate.
The same week, Mariah confirmed her diva status by getting staff at the same hotel to roll out a red carpet accompanied by lit candles for her arrival at 2am.

Mariah Carey has been up to her famous diva-like behaviour again on the set of her new video 'Shake it off'.
The sexy singer asked to be carried around the set after her high heel shoes left her feet hurting
The video's director, Jake Nava, gave her a comfortable pair of slippers to wear but Mariah declined, saying: "I can't wear flat shoes. My feet repel them"

I've always thought she was a lame singer -- she was far and away the worst singer on the benefit for Katrina with all her breathy trills and other bad singing habits, not to mention she tried to compete with REAL gospel singers -- and for a former hooker, she sure gives herself a lot of airs. Most truly talented artists don't have time for this kind of bullshit. They're too busy putting everything into giving a good performance.

I admittedly know nothing about what makes a good singer. I suppose Mariah has impressed me & others like me because of her vocal gymnastics, and she has had some catchy songs. Thing is, the more I learn about her, the less I can stand her music, much like Michael Jackson. If I hear either of them on the radio, I change the station. And I used to like their music a lot.
