Default Jermaine Dupri getting fired over Janet Jackson's poor sales

October 5. Yesterday Soundscan reported that Janet Jackson's latest album 20 Y.O. sold 296,000 copies - one of her worst showings. Reports are that Virgin Records execs are furious over Janet's lackluster performance. And now MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Jermaine Dupri may be getting fired as a result.

MediaTakeOut.com spoke late last night with a Virgin Records insider who blames Jermaine Dupri for Janet's poor album sales. The insider explained, "Janet Jackson is a pop icon, and Jermaine tried to turn her into an R&B singer ... I mean she's [EXPLITIVE] Janet Jackson not Letoya Luckett." The angry insider continued, "this was really a great album, I still can't figure out how Jermaine messed this one up so badly."

And according to our source, Jermaine Dupri was on thin ice at Virgin even before the album was released. The source tells, "during the build up for Janet's album, Jermaine made some comments that people around here thought were racist ... he said that Janet makes music for Black people ... I guess he didn't want White people to buy her album." The source continued, "after he made those statements, [a top Virgin Records executive] told me that if Janet didn't sell big, Jermaine was getting fired."

And we're not the only people hearing the chatter over at Virgin. Popular blog o1lt.com and online magazine HHN Live are also reporting that Jermaine's job is in jeopardy.

Representatives for Virgin Records and Jermaine Dupri were unavailable for comment.

Maybe it's because Janet is older and her audience has moved on? I haven't bought a "cd" in a really long time, given that you can pick & choose what you buy on itunes, etc.... I have some of her old stuff, but just haven't gotten around to buying or even listening to any of this 20YO album.

JD has a pretty good track record behind him for producing, etc., hopefully they don't make him the scapegoat in all of this.

I feel like Janet is stuck in a time warp; she gets older but she still acts like some 20 year old pop singer. Maybe if she would actually grow as an adult, and have her music grow with her, she would keep some of her fans—who are now adults—interested.

Just a thought. I'm not a fan but from what I see I just feel like she does the same damn thing over and over.

I liked that Velvet Rope cd.. well some of it anyway. It seemed to have more substance and soul.

For the last 5 years she's been pushing the "Look at my tits, im a slutty whore, my music all revolves around how skanky i can be".

Chicky, you were never that hot to begin with and you're sliding into the MILF zone. It's time to end the snatchflashing.

There's nothing more sad than an aging woman prancing around like a 19 year old tart.

Wasn't there a thread about Beyonce supposedly saying something similar about "making music for Black people"? What is that the new slogan or something? I don't get it. Mostly because I don't believe either said it.

Why would they alienate many of their fans by saying that? Sounds bogus.

Janet needs to realize that she doesn't have to compete with these 20-something year olds. She has created her own style, which many of the current pop stars copy.

Yes there was a thread saying Beyonce said it too. Who knows what to believe.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Janet's music is mostly about the beat and the backup, cause I don't think she herself can sing. She just whispers out the words.

I don't think Janet Jackson selling less records is about race. I believe its more about ageism and sexiism and recycling. Janet's doing the same shit she did in 2001. Sorry, but fans want to see an artist progesss try something new. Why not try to do a straight up soul album with strings, piano or guitar with no beats? Why not a jazz album? But doing the same robotic dancing she did 20 years ago is boring. She's not growing anymore as an artist. Janet hasn't had a no.1 hit in five years.

I also think because Janet is a woman in music and at age 40 there is so much incredible pressure for her to be sexy. I just don't think its fair. I think it was dangerous of Janet to drop 60 pounds in four months. I don't care what Janet says I do not beieve she just worked out and eat healthy. I believe she had some assistance. Ever heard of I believe it is called colonics? Where a person takes a fast doesn't eat and they clean the body. Its a very fast way to lose weight. Maybe she didn't have surgery but she did more then just eat right and workout.

I am a Janet Jackson fan I have four of her albums but even I think she's acting kind of desperate. I mean constantly taking her clothes off. The woman is in great shape but I think at 40 people want to see some maturity some class some sophistication. Madonna I don't like her or even JLO not a big fan of hers but both these ladies dress their age. Oprah had a show about women should dress a certain age and I agree.
