That's one of the spicier revelations in William Sylvester Noonan's "Forever Young: My Friendship with John F. Kennedy Jr.," the latest in a string of books about the doomed heir of Camelot.

"A familiar voice was on his answering machine, calling him 'Kennedy' and moaning about being drunk and in Rome and describing exactly what she wanted to do with" him, Noonan writes.

Kennedy practically fell down laughing when Noonan couldn't place the voice.

"Finally, he looked at me, calmly, like it was nothing," he writes. "Madonna."

Noonan, who was one of JFK Jr.'s oldest friends and appeared on the "Today" show yesterday to promote his book, wrote that Kennedy "had a thing for hardheaded - and beautiful - women."

And none were harder to handle than Bessette, according to Noonan's account.

Bessette used drugs, saw a shrink five days a week - and felt overshadowed by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the book says.

At the wedding rehearsal dinner in 1996, Bessette fretted whether her dress was too revealing for Kennedy Onassis, who had been dead two years by then.

"What do you think Mummy would think?" she asked. "Would she approve of this?"

Bessette couldn't bear the public eye, Noonan wrote.

"They're staring at me," Bessette whispered to Noonan as she looked around a restaurant where they had gone for lunch.

Noonan said he told Bessette, "They did the same thing to Jackie."

"Yeah, well, I need her now, but she's not here," Bessette reportedly replied.

"Carolyn was using drugs, too, and it was taking a toll, making her nervous and sometimes paranoid," Noonan writes.

Kennedy was put off by his wife's "sneaky" behavior. "She is into everything, meddling and manipulating," he once yelled, according to Noonan.

Shortly before the July 1999 plane crash that claimed their lives, Kennedy told his pal that "Carolyn was better."

"But there was something somber in his tone, a portent of some change he didn't get into," Noonan writes.

This is old news dressed up as something amazingly new? Everyone knew they were both into drugs and that she was a neurotic harpy and he was his father's son when it came to shagging anything with a pulse. You do have to wonder if that family is cursed. They certainly don't have much to be proud of these days and cling desperately to the glory days of Camelot 40 years ago (and so do their various cling-on 'friends').

I just think it's kind of tacky that one of his oldest friends would do this. Makes me wonder about what my friends will tell after I'm gone...hmmm.

Anyway, I always heard that she was the druggie (big coke head) and he chased the blondes but stopped when he met her.

The Kennedy's are notorious to ostracizing anyone who speaks publicly about their personal lives. This guy must realize he's now 'outside' that inner circle. I don't so much find what he writes unbelievable, but I've read enough on Caroline to determine she doesn't take after anybody - she was her own woman. I'm mean, really! Who speaks like this about a mother-in-law they never knew? "What do you think Mummy would think?" I call bullshit!

Well really, there aren't too many of the Kennedys left to ostracize him. Ones to really care about anyways.

The east coast is crawling with Kennedy relatives. Bobby Kennedy had a slew of children, most of whom had a bunch themselves. And that's just Bobby. Go to Martha's Vineyard or Cape Cod or the Hamptons in the summer...you can barely walk down the street without tripping over one.

But Butt(heehee)are they pretty much unknown? I mean to the general public. I probably wouldn't know one unless they bit me in the ass with those teeth! ouch! LOL

I guess as long as Caroline and Ted are still around, somebody's still holding onto the legacy of Camelot pretty tightly.

I dont feel like going into my whole opinion on this story; ooh drugs, sex- what a shock. So I'll just say that JFK Jr sure was a fine piece of ass.

See, every report I heard/read about Carolyn was that she was NOT a drug user and that everyone who said otherwise is a huge liar. See......and people wonder why we don't believe anything anyone says. I swear, the guy that wrote this book was ONE of those people saying she didn't do drugs.
