Some animal lovers aren’t shedding any crocodile tears for Steve Irwin.
The Aussie naturalist, known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed last week by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. But the folks at PETA are neither surprised nor upset by his passing.
“It comes as no shock at all that Steve Irwin should die provoking a dangerous animal,” PETA’s Dan Mathews tells The Scoop. “He made a career out of antagonizing frightened wild animals, which is a very dangerous message to send to kids.”
Does Irwin’s career as a naturalist impress the animal-rights group? Says Mathews: “If you compare him with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star.”

"Provoking a dangerous animal"? They do know it was a stingray, right? This really doesn't help PETA when they have someone like Dan Mathews saying ignorant shit like this.

Ahem. Crocodile tears are fake, insincere tears. Since PETA
isn't shedding any crocodile tears, does that mean they're
shedding real tears?

I'd say anything with a barb that big is potentially dangerous. It's not an animal that you keep at home for the kids to play with. Even if most of the time they're docile, you don't want to be around an animal with a long barb if they're feeling threatened.

I never thought I would see the day that PETA and I agreed on anything!!!
Smart monkeys stay away from crocodiles and manta rays. There is no such thing as a "safe" wild animal. Their instincts keep them alive....unlike a certain deceased tv star.....

All I can say is that I learned quite a bit about animals from Steve. Things I wouldn't have known. I can't say that I was shocked that he died like he did. It was the nature of his work and he knew it. He brought to my attention that there are many animals that are being forced out of their habitat because of our overdevelopment. He also informed me of animals that may not be on this earth much longer.
So PETA shouldn't be too harsh on him. He has done some good for the animals. C'mon! You got to at least give him credit for that.

Thank you. That is a pet peeve of mine. People throw that term around all the time, and it's obvious that they aren't using it correctly.
Of course PETA isn't crying over Steve. He's human, duh. Humans don't deserve tears.

Sometimes PETA just really needs to shut the fuck up and not turn everything into a debate.

I think they used the term crocodile terms to indicate that no, they wouldn't jump on the mourning bandwagon despite the fact that Steve Irwin is being lauded from one end of the west to the other. Anyway, I'm sad for his family he died but since this is only the third recorded stingray attack/death, something says he may have done some provoking. I don't know enough about the field to really back that up but common sense tells me maybe he got a bit too big for his britches.

I can see PETA's point, but as usual , they go to extremes. I would say that Steve Irwin was a little rough with animals, but I think that is because he was overconfident and was overly comfortable with them. I don't think he was maliciously antagonizing and persecuting the animals on his program, the way PETA and other hysterics claim. I think he thought of the animals as his friends and I think he loved them. But the critters he chased may not have exactly returned his feelings in kind; perhaps they perceived him as a pesky little brother. As far as the stingray goes, I think he may have been frightened by an enthusiastic guy paddling around his territory with a camera crew. He reacted to defend his territory. Steve Irwin may have gotten a little carried away at times, but he was very sincere and his intentions were good. I wish folks like PETA and Germaine Greer would try to at least keep their mouths shut for awhile and let the family grieve in peace.

Doesnt do PETA any favours.
The guy was OTT but it worked in getting his message across.
It illustrates PETA's lack of savvy in todays society, Jacques Cousteau wouldnt pull the audience of gen x / y and next that conservation groups need to target. The Older generations arent who they need to get to move forward.
Irwin was on their side too. Particularly with croc's. Some armchair liberal PETA supporter might think 'oh poor wild free thing. leave it alone' when he was 'harassing' some croc. Thing is he caught and moved it away from people.
If you live here in Oz we know that when a croc takes someone it becomes open season on them - they just shoot them until they find one with body parts or they get bored ( usually the latter ). so that must be what PETA think is good. GO PETA!!!
