Jessica Simpson: "I'm actually not dating John Mayer"

O'Donnell then tried to get to the bottom of tabloid reports that she is dating Mayer, prodding her with, "You don't want to say, but maybe?" Simpson sighed and shook her head saying, "I love it that she just goes right there....I'm actually not dating John Mayer." O'Donnell feigned shock saying, "You mean People magazine was wrong?"

The publication featured Simpson on the cover last week with the headline, 'I'm in love,' referring to Simpson's reported new relationship with Mayer. She added, "And they put this quote saying that I'm in love! You know, he's my friend, I've known him for a couple years."

I had the impression that the People story was done with her cooperation. When People breaks celebrity news, it's usually because the celebs in question want the story out. That's how People operates.

So maybe they're broken up already. Or she didn't tell Mayer she was going public and he promptly broke up with her? Or they're still together and she's being coy. So many possibilities...

Or it was just a publicity stunt all along, to have all these "sources" come forward only to have both of them deny it like "where the heck did that come from?!" It's kind of obvious that no matter what the deal is, it didn't come out of no where - it was obviously put out there for a reason.

This is in Jessica tradition of believing that she's "dating" every guy she's fucking, bragging about it, and then when the guy finds out that he's now apparently Jessica's new boyfriend, he's freaked out, breaks it off, and Jessica starts backpedaling and accusing all of the tabloids she sold the stories to of lying.
