Despite doing her utmost to hide her bleary-eyed face behind an oversize designer handbag, the 27-year-old actress, who gave birth to her daughter Suri in April, could not avoid the harsh glare of the photographers' flashbulbs.

Wearing a pale pink shirt and her hair worn long, she plodded wearily into the hotel's luxury spa suite for a £120 massage and facial.

There are, of course, several possibilities accounting for Miss Holmes' pained expression - all largely relating to her fiancee, Tom Cruise.

Two weeks ago the 44-year-old Mission Impossible star was sensationally fired by his film company, Paramount Pictures. The unprecedented move threatens to leave the actor's career in tatters.

Both Cruise and Miss Holmes have also been widely criticised for refusing to bring their five-month old daughter into the public eye. Instead, the little girl has been kept firmly under wraps, only being aired to a few select family members and a handful of the couple's celebrity friends.

However, it has now been revealed that the pair have secured a deal with Vanity Fair magazine to print the first ever photos of Suri.

As well as several nights of interrupted sleep and breast feeding, Miss Holmes has had her fiancee's controversial religious cult to contend with.

Under pressure from Cruise, Miss Holmes, a former Catholic, has converted to Scientology, which is based on the understanding that humans are an exiled race from outer space called Thetans.

In a bid to adhere to the cult's doctrine, the Dawson's Creek actress was forced to give birth in silence.

Whether Miss Homes' slightly glum expression can be attributed to the faith's vehement outlawing of all anti-depressants to treat post-natal depression, is unknown.

She looks zombish in the picture... If she can have rational thoughts of her own now I agree buttmunch she probably is wondering what the hell she signed up for.

It would be ironic if she was, but for her sake, I sure hope she's not. I, too, agree w/ Buttmunch. I'm sure she's sorry she ever taped Tom's Tiger Beat poster up in her bedroom wall.

The whole sorry saga reminds me of Grace Kelly. Ambitious actress with a future, snapped up by a publicity machine. Career over, no future acting roles, even though being a princess must have sounded kinda cool, the reality was entirely something else. Katie is not even with a Prince.

Tom at one point was kind of considered a ''Prince'' of Hollywood, he certainly made a lot of people a lot of money. He single-handedly managed to destroy that really now didn't he?

I've realised that in ''Hollywood'' the best way of dealing with things is really not to have an opinion, just to stay silent and be an image rather than a thinking, ''real'' person. The general public don't want to hear someone's real thoughts because they either shoot them down straight away ANYWAY (come on, draggin Brooke Shields into a fight about anti-depressants?!), or will find SOME way of pulling the point apart if they don't like that person. It's really sad but it's just the way it is. Tom, in all his glory, managed to prove that theory conclusively, SIMPLY because after a relatively long-standing career he got too cocky and thought the public would accept him no matter what. He forgot the golden rules of just shutting the hell up.

She sure as shit looks as if she's suffering from something. I would say poor girl, but she's an adult that put herself in this situation, but she doesn't look like a happy young mother and wife-to-be!

She just looks extremely tired to me...not at all how the article read...she looks like a new mother who has had no sleep...no time to eat/shower or even run a brush through her hair....new mothers all look like this...well most of them....she is probably trying to be a "real" mother and not have all the nanny's so this is what being a "real" mother looks like....hahahahahaha

I don't buy that it is Postpartum. It is the what the fuck have I gotten myself into. Or side effects from the brainwashing. EVEN if they come out and say it is PP, I don't buy it. It would be a way to get Tom back in nice with the public. Ain't gonna happen. It's a bitch, isn't it Tom? hahaha.

I read an article in Star (I know- not the most credible) about how Katie might be trying to quietly plan an "escape". It said that Tom's house has special security features that they believe are designed to keep Katie from being able to leave without a chaperone or permission, such as razor wired fences, security cameras, motion detectors, etc. All of these could also be there to prevent paparazzi from getting in, though. It suggested that the only way for Katie to leave without Tom's knowledge or permission would be if a helicopter were to land in the front yard. There were interviews from a former Scientology Celebrity Centre officer or something who said it's very likely that Katie is being drugged at the center and if they learn of her plan to leave, will probably be held against her will and forced to undergo a procedure where they subject her to "horrific" mental abuse and basically try to convince her that she's crazy (like literally mentally ill). (I personally believe they've already done this- that she had reservations/second thoughts after Tom suggested the "pregnancy" and they put her through this procedure, resulting in the terrified and brainwashed looking product "Kate Cruise") It was scary. There were also indications from friends that Kathy and Martin Holmes are preparing for the "escape". Katie was recently overheard at lunch talking to a lawyer about filing suit against someone. It said she looked distressed as they talked about it, and at the end of the meeting she said, "Go ahead and draw up the papers." Kathy and Martin have prepared a room in their home for Katie and Suri.
