Ice Cube blasts 'bling'
The rapper turned actor wants a return to politics in Hip-Hop.
Ice Cube has slammed the 'bling party' lifestyle of modern hip-hop, wishing that more modern day artists would embrace the early 90's, confrontational hip-hop style.
In a recent interview the former N.W.A. star, who has subsequently led a successful solo career in music and film, hit out at the latest crop of performers, claiming they are only interested in the world of consumerism 'bling'.
"Political rap has been pushed into the background, and rap has turned into bling party music, he says. "Groups like Public Enemy and KRS-One have no stage any more. I've been doing this 20 years - but rap is full of bravado now, and nobody wants to listen."

I agree with him. Public Enemy created what is probably (arguably) the greatest rap ever and they did it by trying to say something important. 'A Nation of Millions...' is still in rotation around here.

Why is he irrelevant?? He's a legend in his own right...i beleive he has every right to say and feel how he does...being in the rap game for as long as he has...Rap has gotten sooooo drenched in EXCESS it's pathetic....I used to love rap music...back in the Biggie Smalls....2Pac days...now ANYONE can rap...they can say the wackest shit ever and just because it has a good beat...they're going platinum....Bring back the Nas'/Jay Z's/Biggie/TuPac/Mos Def/Talib Qwali etc....oh and let's NOt forget the White boys trying to rap...i.e. K.Fed....Bubby Sparks...etc...now that's when ya know...rap is going straight to HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Snuff maker, I have to say I don't really understand what you're saying at all.
But Ice Cube is right. There's nothing wrong with party rap, but Rap music used to encompass all angles, including political and education topics as well. It was storytelling. And hip hop/rap music right now is nothing but bling, hos and drugs and how hard I am. And the sad part is many black kids are buying into that.
Sigh...where is my De La Soul or my Tribe Called Quest?

I am so sick of the good beat but horrid lyrics. Most lyrics today are demeaning to women - calling them whores and making it out that women are good to fuck. Lyrics are so sexually charged that it can be embarrassing driving with my daughter and listening together. She is just about 13 and wants to listen to the "cool" music like her friends. I allow it and even enjoy the beat. I use it as a chance to start conversations about my values.

Ice Cube hasn't put out an album in 6 years and recently decided to go in studio and make a new one and his label said, no thanks. Irrelevant. Nobody wants to hear his shit anymore, he should stick to acting while the money's good.

I don't disagree with your whole post, but The Beastie Boys have been around for almost 20 years, and they started out all 'girls and parties', but I think they've tackled some pretty touchy subjects. And I think they rap pretty damn good for white guys!
