Jessica Simpson says she's in love with John Mayer and so is her dad

Even her dad, Joe, is a fan of her new beau. "I love John Mayer," he told PEOPLE Tuesday at the New York City release party for Simpson's new album, A Public Affair. "I love his music. I love his talent. The last time he was at the House of Blues in L.A., I went by myself to see him play."

The most important thing to Joe? "If my daughter's happy, then I'm happy," he says. "And if she finds love, then I'm in love with the fact that she finds happiness. It's been a tough year for her. A lot of disappointment. And my greatest joy as a father is to see my baby be happy."

Simpson and Mayer, 28, first met when Simpson was still married to Nick Lachey, 32. After her November 2005 separation, they bumped into each other again in June at the New York City nightclub Double Seven, where a source tells PEOPLE Simpson was "flirting up a storm" with both Mayer and actor Jared Leto.

Eventually Mayer, who's currently touring with Sheryl Crow, passed the ultimate test: He babysat Simpson's maltipoo, Daisy. "If you're in with Daisy," a Simpson pal tells PEOPLE, "you're in with her!"

This is just a shot at Nick. Seems like dad is trying to make NicK jealous by saying how much he loves John. I wonder what he will say when John dumps his precious daughter. I'm not a fan of John Mayers but, why does her keep jumping from one big breasted airhead (Jennifer Love Hewitt) to another

^^Good point. Well, he likes em busty and stupid I guess. He is kind of scary looking himself. It's been said before, but Nick getting out is the best thing that could have happened to him.

i don't believe she is with john, this whole thing is so fake to me..if anything john would hit it and run...maybe he needs some publicity too...who knows?

She did. On their Newlyweds show Nick made a few comments about this. In one episode it was a holiday, like their anniversary or something, and Nick said something to Jessica about how he'd like to have sex twice a week. Jessica was visibly appalled. In another part Jess was like "at the beginning of our marriage you used to open doors for me all the time" and Nick replied, "at the beginning of our marriage I was getting laid."

Personally, I think Nick is LONG over Jessica and her Dad. He seems perfectly content with Vanessa. I'm sure he looks back on his days in the Simpson household and wonders "What the hell was I thinking?" I mean really! Who wants to share their marriage with the rest of their family. I sure as hell don't!!
